No idea on the reliability of US trucks vs. a Toureg.......maybe you do. I do know the toureg...should be called a boureg

What are the big differences?
The VW is of monocoque construction, more like a car or a WK, instead of shitter US trucks with seperate chassis construction.
The VW also has independent suspension all round (air opt) not US style live axle crap.
So effectively, while NOT a super heavy duty truck, it's not meant to be, but I would expect it to drive very nicely. A good compromise I think.

You think they'll be able to fit a 10cyl in there?3
Of course, this is just a ute version of a Toureg with a longer wheelbase. The V10 is already available in the Toureg ;)

yeah....and a rear bed thats virtually useless.....IE. Honda truck, ford sporttrack etc. You need to drive a new F150, Chevy 1500 or dodge ram before you go bashing something you know nothing about. Your thinking of a 1985 F150......

haha, Scott's fired up :)

I've driven a mate's 2009 Ram SRT10, does that count? I'm assuming that would be near the pinnacle? lol..... I'll stand by my assessment mate ;) I know American's are very patriotic, much like many Australians re their Holdnes and Aussie designed Fords :)

All I'm saying is that to me this is a good compromise vehicle for us that dont want or need an enormous full size truck, ie, a WK sized truck, instead of a Escalade sized SUV ;) Got me?

Like, I rarely have anyone in the back of my Jeep, heck, I HATE letting anyone in there because the rear seat packagingand comfort is the WORST. I also get annoyed having to baby my cargo compartment with towels etc to avoid scratching it, as it's always full of race car stuff.
So for me, this DESIGN and SIZE of vehicle would be good, and if it could still tow 8000lbs like the normal Toureg, then even better :)

I didn't mean to offend any Americans, but you guys DO live in a little bit of a "bubble" when it comes to vehicle quality.
You see, over here we've been exposed to US, european AND japanese cars longer than any other western country, and hence we haven't really devoped a lean to any country of origin, merely a lean toward good product.

I'm with Scott, I've driven an '09 F150 Crew Cab King Ranch 4x4, and not only did it easily drive smoother and handle better than my WK (2wd), the interior easily rivals that of any German luxury SUV I have ever seen, easily!

And I've driven a Cayenne (I'm assuming it is similar to the Toureg), actually 3 (different trim levels), and they were all garbage in my opinion. Not a very comfortable ride at all.

This vehicle could be different and I'm sure it is, but (at least here) it just isn't worth the extra cost.

At the end of the day, it comes down to subjective opinion and no one can tell what you like. To each its own.

Even Americans are waking up..... 15 years ago Toyata was scared to introduce a full-size pickup, deliberatly underpowering their new Tacoma with a puny V6..... once the Americans realised how much nicer it was to drive, they began demanding more power... they gave it a V8 version, opening the flood goates for a raft of Japanese full size trucks.

Around the same time the Honda Accord took over from the Taurus as America's biggest selling passenger car.... and Amwerican's have shunned US designed cars ever since....

so Scott, maybe I do actually know a little bit mate ;)

You make a good point, if the vehicle fits your needs, then it fits your needs. There can't be an argument against that.

Effectively I'm trying to say that slowly but surely, he typical american is acquiring a more "universal" taste in vehicles. And yes Matt, Cayenne's in my eyes are garbage (even though they share LOTS with a Toureg), interior especially as it's bespoke Porsche. I don't think the ride is too bad though, but Australia DOES get a unique suspension tune.

See, this is what I mean by "bubble". You're vehicle market is highly protected by artificially high import taxes on overseas vehicles, which effectively makes your home-grown trucks more attractive price-wise.

Over here, a 2010 F150 is the same price as (for instance), a new Cayenne S........ they're both taxed the same, nothing artificial..... hence, we see it differently.

Exactly what I was trying to get across... a lot of Americans probably unfairly hold something against "foreign" cars because of the higher cost.

To me, "truck" and "ute" are two different things. A truck to me is far more capable than a "ute". The ute is more like a "mini truck" to me (i.e. Tacoma, Frontier, Dakota, etc). They serve different purposes for different people.

If I had a 15,000 pound fifth wheel, I wouldn't buy a ute. But say I had a little pop-up camper or a small boat and didn't want a big ass truck - the ute would be right up my alley.

Marlin
09-28-2009, 07:06 PM
Sorry Scott, I can't recall any hard and fast data right now on the tax situation.
I think we maybe have our wires crossed on the term "import"? When I say it, it means a vehicle that is actually imported as a whole, NOT an overseas brand merely manufactured Stateside.
A snippet from a paper that you no doubt already know;

Japanese automakers began producing in the United States in the 1980s largely as a means
to avoid the constraints of a voluntary restraint agreement on Japanese exports of passenger
vehicles to the United States. These assembly operations are known as ‘transplants.’
Localized production allows Japanese automakers to remain responsive to U.S. market
developments, alleviate potential trade friction, and dramatically reduce transportation costs.
German automakers BMW and Mercedes-Benz adopted this strategy in the 1990s, with
production beginning in their newly established plants in South Carolina in 1994 and
Alabama in 1997, respectively. The Korean industry will be the next to establish assembly
operations in the United States, with Hyundai announcing in April 2002 that it would begin
production in Alabama in 2005.11

Ok,
1. the VW is a terrible unibody and unibody + pick-up truck = epic fail

2. Real pick-ups are body on frame = higher load rating

3. real pick-ups are american and can take a hit unlike these crapy honda ridgeline wanna bees.

I will agree that the one thing the American car/truck industry does better than anyone is the full size pick-up. The Nissan, and Toyota are nice trucks, but just dont have that certain something that makes the Dodge, Ford, or Chevy trucks what they are. I will also agree that Americans are biased toward our home built vehicles.

Im not a fan of that VW looks-wise at all. They should stick to the coupes and sedans and their hatches. However i know nothing about the toureg. If i want a pickup truck it'll be a F150, Ram or Silverado. I know alot of people with f150s that had 300k miles on those trucks, and well more on the silverados. Dont know many with Rams. I wont consider anything else. Dont feed me any hype about the japs and their trucks. Just adding to a friendly debate :D.
