Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

The Jeep has been at the dealer since 12/12/11. I called today expecting it to be done and they advised me that once it was put back together there was noise coming from the cam phasers. Parts are ordered and expected in a couple days. Looks like it has to be torn apart again.

Dont Listen to that post. Ofcourse they do. anything bought from a dealer has to have some type of warranty. Only problem is the issue has to reveal itself within the first 30 days. That's only if it is "not" a Certified Vehicle. In my experience(and I worked at one for about five minutes) dealers aren't the best...he said so in the the post..the dealer tried to pull a fast one and send it out the door by clearing the code. My friend had trouble with the tranny on her Acura about 40k and they gave her guff, and they maintained her MDX since 15k. She was religious about the service records. On board computers can record current rpm average speed etc, just like a cop can calculate speed left by skid marks on the road.

Other than a woman, there is no bigger headache to a man than a car that won't run right. lol First year body styles should be avoided a couple years....especially when they turn up on a lot with low mileage
I rolled the dice when I bought my 05....it's nice but it still has its issues...

+rep on the comment about buying first year autos. I will never do it again. In fact, I have savings for a 2010 SRT WK. (The last year model.)

My 05 has been good so for though. I worked out some kinks and have a few more to work out before its handed over to my brother.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

I bought a used Pt Cruiser that was a year old when i bought it and it was certified thru the Chryser Dealership...i had so many issues with the car that i contacted an attorney in my state and told them my story and the issues i was having. They said it wasn't covered under the Lemon Law but something else that was like the Lemon Law. I used the attorney and sued Chrysler getting a lump sum in return for my hassle with the car and dealership.

I would suggest you contact an attorney and see what they say. There are Laws or Acts out there that protect the buyer of a used vehicle that isn't that old of a used car. Definitely a 2011 in 2012 would be covered by something that would help in a lawsuit.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Not sure what state you live in. Here in California a vehicle must be Smog Checked at the time of sale. This is significant because:
1.) The seller of the vehicle (private or a business) is responsible for ensuring that the vehicle will pass the Smog Check.
2.) If your Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL or what you are calling the CEL) is "On" the vehicle will NOT pass a Smog Check test in California.
3.) In California you can simply return the vehicle to the seller and allow them the opportunity to repair the vehicle so that it will Pass the Smog Test (within 30 days of the date of sale) -or- they can give you your money back and take the vehicle back.

I am a lawyer and I practice in wv, oh, and ky. I take some lemon law cases from time to time. If I recall correctly, the ky lemon law statute applies for 12 mo or 12,000 miles.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

To the OP: Bad stuff, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. I have an 11 WK2 3.6L as well, my build date is 10/10. My question is, did they explain to you any details about the head failure? Did you notice anything that would indicate this issue externally: such as blowing smoke or water vapor (tailpipe), cloudy oil, or dirty coolant, or fluid spatter/pooling in the engine compartment?

I'm only asking because I am dealing with a coolant loss issue that has come down to a defective radiator. However, before that was established, I was thinking UH OH after reading your story. On top of that, it seems like my exhaust is *sometimes* quite visible when it is near/below freezing, even after the engine is well up to operating temp. I only notice this, however, when I am driving and someone is pulled up behind me, backlighting the exhaust.

Anyway, I'd like to know any symptoms you noticed aside from the MIL and the lack of compression/power.

And, best of luck to you and hoping you get complete resolution - I'm definitely following your story with interest.

By now you probably got your jeep back. Hopefully she is purring like a kitten. If not, be patient and Stern. let the dealer do all of the required work and hold them to a "like new" standard. Seek representation if the HEEP just doesn't run right no matter what the dealer does after this repair. It sucks because u just want your rig back. A bad head can cause a host of issues, most of which are not easily diagnosed. The dealer will try to replace sensors etc. before cracking open a motor......that's probably why you had to continuoulsy keep taking the jeep back. IMO I would pay "only" the warranty deductible....nothing else. See if the 7/70 can be applied to your truck and transfer it immediately. When I bought my 05 I had to pay to transfer the 7/70. I am sure once they fix the head, your truck will be flawless....atleast for a while!! Remember, manufactures from Ford, Chevy, Toyota....all of 'em have this problem.

EDIT: I see that this post has been brought up from being a month old so most of this is to be disregarded, none the less much of it should be stated so Ill leave it.

Im very sorry for your troubles, I will say that what I have quoted is typically when I get a car that has had all of that replaced by an independent shop... If you have any more service work done there DEMAND that that specific tech NOT touch your vehicle, if it doesn't say on your paperwork the tech number (it should) they can look it up. This is just sad! I understand being a tech we don't get paid at all what we are worth to diagnose warranty (part of the problem, at the same time I understand if we did there would be those that abused the crap out of it and still did a crappy job). At the same time swapping coils injectors and plugs to known good cylinders ELIMINATE them and cost no one any money plus it helps narrow the possible problems. I generally make an effort to understand where the tech was coming from (being one and not being perfect myself) but there is no excuse for that blatant parts throwing and not verifying the non repair prior to returning it to you, and there is no better description of that tech than hack (well there are better words but I prefer not to say them, it is hacks like this that make all you guys hate me and that PISSES ME OFF).

I would say your probably going to be set with the new head because it is HIGHLY unlikely that is is a lack of compression due to anything in the bottom end and a new head will ensure no warpage, new head gasket and properly functioning and sealing valves... the beauty of replacing a cylinder head under warranty.

Again, sorry you have had to deal with this, and remember what I said, it was not a suggestion I am telling you, DO NOT LET THAT TECH TOUCH YOUR CAR AGAIN! Drive away from the dealer and call and speak to the service manager or owner if they try to explain that it was his "diagnosis" so its his repair to perform.

Also keep in mind that you have had multiple trips to the dealer (due to a HACK tech) but its all been for one concern, hopefully with this cylinder head you can go onto enjoying your new-to-you vehicle and not continue repeated trips to the dealer. Its crappy no matter what but one concern due to be fixed is much better than a hand full of problems that keeps you going back to the dealer (at least that is how I feel).

Good luck, keep us updated when the repair goes down!
