If you need the head replacement it wont take long for the light to come back on. The dealer always tested ours for about 10 miles or so and it wouldnt come on. After we would take it back home and drive it about 20-30 more miles the light would be back every time.

Is this happening in any of it's other applications (300c, Durango, Charger, etc.)?
Its also happening in some other platforms. Google 3.6 Pentastar misfire.

It seems that you believe that every pentastar will have this issue. There are over a million pentastars built now that would mean that service departments would be flooded with these things if that were the case. There have been some including yourself that had a problem but that doesn't mean everyone will. Production of parts are monitored all the time and when trends show up they are looked into and normally fixed in production and you never hear anything about it. I know you seem to believe you will have this failure again because as you said nothing was changed with the design. But really you have no way of knowing what caused the issue and what may have been done to correct it in the production of the parts.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

dropped mine off yesterday and they are telling me it's a Bad Camshaft sensor. I'm hoping they dig deeper and realize it could be something much more then just a bad sensor. 13k miles on my '11 overland (june '11 build date). The CEL light has been randomly appearing for the past couple months.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Surprise, Surprise! Guess who needs cylinder 2 head replaced? This was discovered yesterday, however I wasn't told till this morning after I dropped my rental car off, I paid for BTW. When asked what I was to drive for the estimated two weeks (apparentlly they are on back order, I wonder why) till my cylinder head gets here, they said we will put your intake back on and will call you when it gets here. I was assured if any further damage comes to my vehicle I would not be at fault. My questions are, is this true, and since the initial thrown code was for cylinder 4 will I need that replaced, and is there an anticipated recall? My service techs could not answer any of that.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

nice. So if indeed this is my issue, you're saying there is a 2+ wk backorder for a new head? My dealer provided me with a 5yr old van, but If I am going to be without the jeep for a couple weeks, i better go back and ask for something different.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Two weeks according to service tech, but keep in mind this is the same group that left my hood up with a part ordered for two days before I dropped by to figure out was going on. According to "the parts specialist" for jeep customer customer service my cylinder has been expedited. Just call me Chimney because my ass is full of smoke at this point. Still very much concerned about cylinder 4 as that was responsible for the original CEL.

A cyclinder head is not just for one cyclinder. It would cover cyclinders 2,4 and 6.

You are correct. There are probably many that have no head issue. But this is becoming more and more common as this new motor gets miles on it and it is happening in more platforms than the JGC. I most likely will not be keeping mine past the 100k powertrain warranty.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

HOly Crap!! had no idea it was this f'ed up. Imagine being the mechanic at the dealer when the car he worked on has come back in again for a third time in a month. I particularly dont show any mercy to dealers because they tow the company line....but Wow! I was thinking about getting the penastar v6 with some years on them, but now I think I will just get the HEMI. Ofcourse, this is after I put 150-160k on my 05....it'll be a couple years.
