Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Yesterday the check engine light came on and started blinkig on my 2011 JGC V-6 with 9,000 miles. Dealer just called, needs a new head due to burnt valves and they're on back-order. Guess I'm not alone?

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Sorry to hear you guys are having these problems, but thank you for making them public so we who might buy a 3.6 GC in the future are armed with this knowledge. As we see some dealers will change the fluids, clean it ,clear the codes, and put it outside for one of us to buy. Get a lawyer if need be!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Chrysler put a ton of R&D into this sophisticated engine and it's in 13 models now so hopefully they got it right. When I bought mine there were 16 GCOs at the dealer but only one with the Pentastar, so that's what I drove off in. After 5 months and 12k miles it still runs perfect. Knock on wood, because my last truck was a gas guzzler and the Hemi has the same EPA rating as that much heavier vehicle had.

It sucks that some of you have had such terrible experiences with dealers. My salesman called me after I had the car a few weeks to ask me how I was enjoying it. I've never had a dealer do that. And he's called me back three times after that. The last time was after I had some non-routine service to make sure that I was happy with that.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

I had my sensors reset and some type of cleaning process done 2k miles ago and just today the engine light showed up again. I'm sure I may have bigger issues and plan to take it back to dealer next week...sitting at 15kmiles.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Had this same problem just come up in mine. After about 32,000 miles I noticed it starting idling really rough. Low and behold the CEL came on, said it was misfire in cylinder 4, ordered new head (said 2 weeks, but came in 1 week), just went in shop this morning for replacement. Dealership said chrysler will pick up rental (i'll believe it when i see it). Needless to say Im glad it happened under warranty and have now purchased an extended warranty. After reading this forum I hope it doesn't happen again but am not getting my hopes up.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

Is there any information on what the problem is with the cylinder heads and what is different about the replacement ones? Guess I'm wondering if the repair will fix the issues for good.

Early 2011 build with over 26K, so far not seeing any problems like this, fingers crossed. Planning to get an extended warranty but I'm guessing that this issue is being covered under the powertrain warranty.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

yes, this would fall under the 100k pwr train warranty, so no real reason to purchase the extended warranty for this repair. Mine was built during the last week of the '11 run and look to have the issue. There seems to be no set build dates as there are many '12s having issues.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

You find some information here http://www.pentastars.com/engines/repairs.php and here http://www.allpar.com/forums/topic/1...astar-problem/

Apparently, there was a problem with tool during manufacturing, so some wholes for the valves are to big causing two issues;
- a ticking noise which isn't dangerous
- a burned outlet valve (which unfortunately makes the ticking as well)
However, the later causes a CEL.

Good news, there is a fixed head available and Chrysler is changing the heads when the CEL goes off.

...after getting gas 2 days later my cel went off, so as of right not now I'm going to hope it was gas cap related and ignore it unless it returns.

Hmm Three times? Maybe he is suprised you haven't been back for service yet! JK glad you have a great one!

Hey gang I ran across this customer satisfaction TSB thingy that says some V6 engines need to be replaced because of dirt in the yada yada. It specifically says that the engine is supposed to be replaced before selling the vehicle whether new or used. It also mentions they are suppose to do that by federal law.

Would be a kick in the A$$ if one of you guys issue was from this. It gives dates of the engine and a sales code but I havent figured out how to tell the build date on the engine. Im sure its easy enough to figure out for someone who knows where it is.

its for 2012 vehicles with V6 from Salalito wherever that is. Engines built previuos to 9/19/2012. edit: ( oh thats Mexico )

http://www.wk2jeeps.com/tsb/rc_L3311.pdf

Now if I can just figure where to tell the engine build date is recorded lol.

Am I reading it correct then that is this a manufacturing defect? Has there been anyone with early 2011 builds that is affected?

Guess I'm a little sensitive because years ago I had a Ford Explorer that developed a cylinder head crack at 15K miles...got it replaced under warranty but it shook my confidence in the long-term reliability of the engine. Got rid of the vehicle at 120K because it was starting to burn a lot of oil and because it was going into the shop every few months for something major.

Re: 11 Grand Cherokee Needs Head Replacement?

The cylinder head replacement for my 2011 JGC with just 9,000 miles is now backordered to first week in September. I knew I should never have switched from the Honda Pilot!
