Re: 12 Jeep GC High pitch humming noise from Gauges?!

I just bought 2014 Grand Cherokee...its making that high pitched noise from the steering wheel area ONLY while in idle. I've had the car for 1 week. The high pitched sound is obvious, but very faint...still very annoying.

Re: 12 Jeep GC High pitch humming noise from Gauges?!

Any word yet on whether or not the humming noise was fixed by the replacement of the power steering pump? I have a 2014 GC and really enjoy it but the humming (at idle) is realy becoming an issue.

I'll let you all know what happens Monday 8/05/13. The last update I have is that an actual Chrysler service representative is going to be taking a look at my car Mon or Tues. after the dealership service guys did nothing. Not very optimistic, but the sound is just annoying and no new car owner should have to put up with these design/electronic flaws. I left my JGC 2014 at the service center over the weekend so they get tired of seeing it and actually fix the issue. The GM see,s to be trying his best to help...he has the 2014 Overland and doesn't hear any sounds, so he knows the sound I'm hearing is not right!

Update: The service department heard the sound again today, the factory rep from Chrysler won't be there for another few weeks. The service department notified Chrysler Star Case for my car issue regarding the sound. In addition, I put a call in to the Chrysler /Jeep national customer service number : 1-800-992-1997. Hours: 8am-5pm. Make sure to select the number 3 for Jeep. The service dept said they believe it is coming from the power steering motor (which is electric). Currently there is no fukin fix to this sound, however, if people keep complaining them a tech service bulletin will be released by Chrysler and they could provide a fix. Needless to say, I'm pissed off. I hope you call the national number after exploring all the options with service dept like I did. The service manager is making an appointment for me to meet with the Chrysler Factory rep the next time he comes to the shop. Sorry for the bad news...maybe down the road there will be a fix.

This is from another customer with the same issue:

So here's what we've come up with: Service technician from Chrysler analyzed all of the data (drove other 2014's on the lot, consulted with Jeep, watched my video "evidence" and whatnot). The sound is from the electronic steering assist. As the steering system uses hydraulic pressure, it builds up inside and occasionally, needs to bleed the excess pressure off when it's not needed. The sound we're hearing is that pressure being released from the assist's valve. In some cases, it's louder than normal, just because that's the nature of the beast. If you turn everything that makes noise off in the car as you drive, you can hear it happen more often, just a lot softer (I hear it when I slow to a stop sometimes, just a hell of a lot quieter). The tech says there is no fix for this, because it's doing what it's supposed to be doing. I asked if there's a way to dampen the sound and he said no (which I am dubious of... if I knew exactly where that pressure outputs I wonder if something could be rigged). Jeep knows the results of this, I've spoken to them. They said they've logged all of the results of this, but say there's nothing to be done for now. I guess at this point, we'll have to wait until enough people complain (when a lot more 2014s are on the road) and then maybe they'll release a TSB for it. I don't really see what more can be done. I've taken this as far as possible I believe. Am I missing something?

Re: 12 Jeep GC High pitch humming noise from Gauges?!

Good news Bad news,

First I have a 2014 GC Lareado with a 3.6 that I purchased about 1 month ago. I was working with the service manager(s) last week to try and get rid of the noise (a low tone or tuning fork type of sound.) in the steering column. All the service managers and workers had heard it and were at a loss as to what is causing it. The last Service Manager that I talked to used to be a service technician for Chrylser and nailed the problem in about 15 seconds. He said it sounds like the electric power streering pump.
We opened up the hood and listened for the sound and sure enough the noise was coming form there. We discussed various methods of reducing/repairing it but it turns out that a 1/4 inch piece of rubber between the mounting brackets was the easiest fix.
Apparently there was no padding between the "L" connector mount attached to the block (I believe.) and the pump itself thus causing the pump noise to travel up through whatever connections it has to the steering column inside. I have attached a picture and hopefully it is clear enough to see. If not let me know and I will take another. Anyway putting this rubber pad between the brackets reduced the tone to barely audible---for me it is practically nonexistant. I very seldom hear it and when I do it is very, very, faint.

It is working for rme (so far) and hopefully this will help someone else.
