'14 3.6l Engine Trouble

At first start up this morning, my engine idled roughly. I shifted into gear and began my communte to work but found my Jeep was significantly down on power and there was a metallic banging tied to engine speed from the engine compartment. I needed wide open throttle to crest a modest hill. A light in the dash the shape of an engine flickered. At the first stop light, I shut down and restarted the engine. Everything seems fine now.

Any thoughts on what this is? has anybody else experienced this? I've about 1600 miles on it. It has been in the shop 6 times already for non-engine related issues in the roughly 2 months I've owned it.

Really? And you kept driving it while you heard "metallic banging" from under the hood...you even floored it going up a hill?

Re: '14 3.6l Engine Trouble

I would have preferred to pull over and call for assistance. However, I was on my way to work and have a time sensitive job. If I'm not there on time, I risk losing my job. I leave an hour before work for a twenty minute commute because of this. My job means far more to me than my car. Without my job, there is no money to pay for my car, my home, food and clothing for my wife and child. This is my financial reality.

So, given the decision to risk my job or further damage to an already damaged car, I'll chose the latter every time.

I think we can all agree that a forum like this is best used to share ideas and solutions, not criticise the decisions of others that you don't onderstand.

Does it sound like a clicking noise? Almost like a loud diesel engine?

One of the cylinder heads on my hemi went bad and it made this noise.

Forums are for a little bit of everything.

What I do agree with is that feeding your family is more important that protecting your car. But I'm sure, since this is the internet, not everybody will agree with that either.

Oh I "understand" alright...

Since you went there...I called you out on what NOT to do when you hear engine noise like that, and you didn't like it. Don't blame poor judgment on your job. You ran the risk of possible further damage to your vehicle, you knew it, and you did it anyway.

In my book...if you have a job that doesn't give any leeway to even a breakdown on the highway, then it's time to find another job.

Re: '14 3.6l Engine Trouble

Thanks for chiming in, bill_de and jd31.

It did sound a bit like a diesel engine when it was making the noise. Odd thing is, after restart, it went away and hasn't returned for the past three trips I've taken. Also, I attached my scanner and didn't receive any codes. The lack of codes and that it's performing normally now probably won't give my dealer much to work with if I was to bring it in.

I should also probably mention that, on a few occasions, the engine had an unstable idle but nothing on the scale of what happened yesterday.

JD31, were your engine's syptoms intermittant?

At the onset of the problem the symptoms were intermittent, towards the end it was constant. When I first heard the noise (day 1) I couldn't tell if it was a major problem or a rattle from under the car--I was coming back from a road trip. The next morning I heard it again so I scheduled an appointment with the dealer for the following day (day 3). The dealer changed the oil and sent the Jeep home, and told me to drive it for a bit. For the next two days the rattling sound would come and go. For example, on one morning it made the noise on start up and on the way to the store, but disappeared on my way home. By day 6ish the noise got louder and the check engine light came on. That's when I took it back to the dealer the second time. It's been in the shop 2 weeks but it'll be ready this afternoon (finally!). I'll let you know what the diagnosis is and if they have any idea what caused it.

Re: '14 3.6l Engine Trouble

It is a mistake to second guess people. I would prefer not to run an engine to destruction. At the same time can think of conditions where it would be necessary. That is a judgment call. Also what some would consider banging, another might consider a collapsed lifter. You had to be there to know.

Years ago my judgment and instruments would be all I had to go on. Today we expect the computer to shut itself down if damage is imminent (heck, we have had many just shut down for no reason).

Still suspect I would take a look at the engine temp and oil pressure before deciding what to do. If have a chance would pop the hood and see if anything is obvious (like a missing belt).

But have been in conditions where it just is not possible.

Also since your foot does not connect to the butterfly, when you floor it you really have no idea how the computer may respond, if in "limp home" it may be reducing power significantly.

So bottom line, who knows, only the person in the driver's seat does.

ps I have had a loose spark plug depart before. The sound is incredible but not damaging.

Re: '14 3.6l Engine Trouble

Bet you it was a bad Mass Flow Sensor (or similar) that will adjust Fuel Mixture and Timing. You probably didn't damage anything. It was probably pinging like mad.

After you restarted it, it was probably warmed up enough so the faulty sensor read correctly.

I'd definitely bring it in. Hopefully there is an error code.

Let us know what they find.

Re: '14 3.6l Engine Trouble

NSWlogo- that makes a lot of sense, and would account for why it's working normally now. I did use my own obd11 scanner and didn't get any codes, but I don't know that it's as effective as what the dealer was.

I'll update this thread with the outcome.
