'14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

Hello everybody,

Relatively new member on this forum and this is going to be my first post. First of all, before anyone starts bashing me about this issue being well known on the 2014 models etc I would like to remind everyone to please bare with me because at this point I am very and sad about my purchase and I am debating whether I made a mistake to buy this vehicle.

This is the first time I have ever bought a brand new car and I decided to go with the '14 Jeep GC. My wife and I love the car A LOT but the only major issue we have so far is with the transmission shifting hard and making clunking noises when coming to a stop.

I got the latest flash applied to the vehicle at the dealership the same day that the 21-007-13C TSB came out. The Jeep was doing pretty good after the update (about 80% improvement) but then after a week the same thing started happening with the transmission where it would upshift and downshift hard with the usual clunk noise when coming to a stop from 3rd gear.

Another new thing that has happened after the recent update, whenever my jeep shifts from 3rd gear into the 4th, it goes to 3000-3500 RPM in 3rd and then shifts into the 4th. Is this normal? According to this website (Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - Transmissions) the gear ratios should be as follows:

8HP45 Gear Ratios: 1ST 4.69:1
2ND 3.13:1
3RD 2.10:1
4TH 1.67:1
5TH 1.28:1
6TH 1.00:1
7TH 0.84:1
8TH 0.67:1
REVERSE 3.30:1

All I want to know is that will Chrysler to come out with more tranny updates in the future? or should I just let go of the vehicle because I am afraid that this harsh shifting might be doing internal damage to the transmission? Can someone please tell me if this is just a flash issue and not a major issue with my transmission? Will this harsh shifting stay permanently with me for the life of the car? I am really really upset because I would like to keep this car for more than the 6 years that I have financed it for but I also do not want to end up with a failed transmission in the future because of this rough shifting.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Re: '14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

Have you taken it back to your dealer? If so, what do they say? If you're not satisfied with their response, is there another dealer you can take it to?
My JGC doesn't shift very hard, and I haven't even had the update. You should be able to get this problem taken care of, and remember that the drive train warranty is 5 yrs., 100,000 miles.

Re: '14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

There was at least one person that needed to have a module or 2 replaced. There are a number of existing threads on this topic that may shed some light on it fir you.

Did you let your dealer know that the problem returned?

I have not taken it back to the dealer since the last time I was there in December. I am apporaching my very first oil change in about another 700 miles so I plan on taking it back to the dealer in March and discussing this further with them.
The dealer, after applying the flash back in december, told me to keep an eye out for the rough shifting and basically to just wait for future updates I am guessing there isn't much that the dealership can do about this since this is a well known issue with other owners as well.

Hi, thanks for your response. This might be a silly question but when they replace modules, do they open up the factory sealed transmission and do the replacement? The reason why I ask this is because once a factory fitted transmission is opened up doesn't that become more prone to problems in the future ownership of the vehicle?

Shaakra, Have you read the post on page #4 Flash: Transmission Shift Enhancements(vehicles with 3.6 engine). lots of info in that post. Good luck and a good dealer should get you fixed up.

Re: '14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

My guess is, either the update was not done right or you have a mechanical issue with the transmission.

The problem is with so many software issues I think some mechanical issues get lost in all the noise.

Bring it back and if they don't fix it try another dealer.

For the record my transmission never had hard shifts or clunks. It was just doggy, refused to down shift or downshift too late and too far.

Pretty damn smooth now.

Re: '14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

hmmm... now you have me wondering. Mine occasionally shifts hard. I had the latest update done and the performance is great now (it actually goes now when you press the gas) but sometimes the shift from 2nd to 3rd is very hard, or when coming to a stop the downshift is hard. Hard enough that its easily noticeable. is this what you mean?

I will have to say something on the next trip in...

I have the hard downshift when coming to a stop but it doesn't always happen and I still need to get the latest TSB programming done.

Yes that's exactly what's been going on with my car as well after the latest flash that was performed. 2nd to 3rd is hard and 3rd to 4rd isn't hard but goes over 3000RPM before shifting to 4th. And vehicle majority of the times makes a clunk noise when coming to a stop from 2nd to 1st.

Re: '14 Jeep GC 3.6L Tranny Issues

This was one of the problems with my 14 Overland. Hard downshifting and upshifting with ECO on and off. Very hard shifting in sport mode. At least 5 visits to dealer to fix this issiue with no results. I finally I said enough and trade the jeep last night for 2014 Acura TL SH AWD. Transmission shifts nice and smooth with lots of power to spare. CHrysler needs to step up to fix all the problems with new Jeeps GC.

Sport mode for me is REALLY REALLY awful. Sometimes it's better when I drive with Eco off but as soon as I go into sport mode everything just goes haywire. I'm going to the dealership next month and will bring up all these reoccurring issues with them. If I don't see an improvement with my jeep I might just have to go down your route. I'm really disappointed with Chrysler.
