so it looks like my car takes 5w20

should i

a) go to a dealer and just have them do everything
b) buy my own oil (which brand? castrol? mobil1?) and filter and do it myself?
c) if B, should i stick to 5w20 or go with 0w20?

cost isnt a factor, im planning to keep this car, so i wanna put the best stuff in it from getgo

thanks!.. i know this question might've been asked before but i want up to date info ;)

I would:

a) Absolutely NO!
b) Absolutely YES! Mobil 1 or Castrol are excellent choices!
c) Go with synthetic. Either weight is fine!

I've always used Mobil 1 in the past but I dont think it's approved by Jeep.
Go to your local Wallyworld and pick up a few 5 qrt jugs of Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20.
For a filter I always go with OEM while it's under warranty just in case there is
an issue down the road and the dealer wants to point to the non-OEM filter being the cause.

FYI you'll need 6 qrts and the process is a no-brainer.

Agreed. Unless you are a combined oil and engine engineer, it is usually a good idea to stick to the manufacturer's recommended viscosity and make sure any oil you buy is labelled to meet the manufacturer's requirements.

There are other oils that would probably be perfectly OK, but why risk a warranty argument?

I'd agree with the Pennz platinum. You don't really need full synth, but, it really doesn't cost that much more.

As far as whether to hit a dealer, do the ones in your area attempt to compete with quick change places by offering a no-appointment oil and filter for about $20 bucks, or about double that for full synth, with change-pack options? Those are pretty hard prices to beat unless you have hours and hours of spare time.

Don't put words in my mouth. I just noted that sticking to the manufacturer recommendation can avoid discussions later.

Dunno your area, but the dealers around here all seem to use Pennz Platinum as their full synth in changes. No idea if technically better or the Pennzoil salesman just offers better coffee.

Well, I've been using full synthetic Mobil 1 for the last 30 years or so. My used 2013 JGC V8 needed an oil change(original owner had 2 oil changes done) so I had the local oil change shop use their Pennzoil Premium Gold synthetic oil and a Pennzoil filter.

I also use Pennzoil 5W20 Platinum Synthetic and since I have free oil changes for the first 3 years I take my 2014 GC to the dealer and tell them to use my oil.

I have been using the Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum Synthetic and the oem mopar filter. stick with the 5w20 unless you live in the artic circle maybe go to the 0w20. I think I paid $28 at Walmart for the Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum Synthetic 5 quart jug the last time and around $6 for an OEM filter. that's about $48 for a full synthetic oil change on the 5.7 not too bad. Not too much more than the buffoons at the dealer would want for a regular oil change, I think they wanted $39 when I was there once. Reason I do it my self is time and knowing it was done right not a money thing. this vehicle is a pretty easy change quadralift all the way up, no ramps or jacking needed, I can knock out an oil change in about 20 minutes or drive to the dealer and sit around there for a few hours while their lowest skilled high school kids on summer jobs forget to tighten filters or drain plugs use the wrong oil or what ever else I have read on here . You don't have to use synthetic but if you are going to keep the jeep for a long time it definitely doesn't hurt. the Pennzoil ULTRA is what they recommend in the SRT so if its good enough for SRT is certainly good enough for 3.6 or 5.7

To OP, if you are interested in option B:

Get a Fumoto valve with the short nipple, the small lever clip to prevent the valve from accidentally opening, 3/8" tubing, OEM filters, your choice of oil that meets MS-6395 and do the oil changes yourself. With the Fumoto valve, you can drain directly into a container for recycling and being able to access the oil filter from the top makes for an easy, virtually mess-free oil change. My $.02.

I've been using CastrolEdge 5w20. It does meet Chrysler spec (it does not show on bottle any more, it used to, guess they ran out of room for other specs on the bottle but does show on web site).

I use OEM Filter.

The Pentastar only takes 6 qrts.
The Hemi is 7 qrts.

Did you swap out your Pentastar for a Hemi?
it took 6, we started and let it idle for 15 secs, checked level again.. and it was just below max on dipstick.. so i bought 7th quart and put a little bit in :)

id never swap pentastar... i gunned it few times and for Toronto it has more than enough power.. i AM getting intake, ported throttle-body, and the tune though!

What mileage is recommended for the first and succeeding changes?
0-20w or 5-20? Engine is 3.6 V6. Model is 2014 Limited.
Oil level needs to be checked after running before the top filter drains down.
No problems so far at 4400 miles. I love the 8 speed. Bought in June. Earllier ones seemed to be more sluggish. (The demo I drove was.)

So here is a question, what are dealerships charging for regular vs synthetic oil changes these days. I was picking up oil at walmart the other day and these are the costs that I found for a do it yourself change on the 5.7 with a mopar filter. So that's 7 quarts of 5w20 plus the mopar filter($6.67) for the totals below.

For Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum Full Synthetic it is $45.83
For Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic it is $41.91
For Pennzoil standard non synthetic it is $29.73

What is a dealer full synthetic change going for and what is a standard change? Also what the hell is the difference between Pennzoil ULTRA Platinum and Pennzoil Platinum? They are both Full synthetics and almost the same cost? I have always bought the ULTRA Platinum but now I see there is also just a Platinum which I don't see all that much difference? They seem to tout similar things

Thats exactly the same price it is at walmart $25.17 for the pennzoil platinum full synthetic and the Penzzoil ULTRA Platinum Full Synthetic is $27.97. So not far from the same price like .56 cents a quart difference. So is the ULTRA a full synthetic plus or something like that lol. Just seems strange to have the lesser platinum one cost almost as much as the ultra

its was more just a curiosity of why Pennzoil has two separate full synthetic oils that are nearly the same and are nearly the same price. I don't change my oil to save money I do it to save time and to know it was done right so not cause im pinching pennies on oil lol.
also a lady at work was telling me she paid $229 on a synthetic oil change and I wanted to tell her what a normal rate was cause I thought she was being taken advantage of and wanted to help her.
