2011 Grand Cherokee Hum

I have a 2011 Grand Cherokee Overland, 5.7 Hemi
Does anyone get a strange hum from the engine at freeway speed when the ECO light comes on? Is this normal? I find it annoying but liveable if thats the way it has to be.
I have heard the hum at lower speeds also. I know its running just 4 cylinders when the Eco light comes on but wished I didnt hear that hum. Is there a solution to that?

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Hum

On your 2011, drop it from Drive to 5 on the shifter and it will run on eight cyl. If you have a tow/haul button, that will also keep it in eight.
The ECO symbol will come on when you are driving light footed; it will come on even in eight cyl.
Obviously this will affect your mileage. I drive 95% city which gives me 9.5 mpg. All highway driving with cruise control will deliver 19-20 with mountain passes.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Hum

That's insane. I hate cylinder shut off. I wish that Chrysler had better V-8s. The newer WK2 have more gears but again you need to switch to CVT mode with manual gear changes. You can disable the ECO in the display module, while in park. It's in the options, with auto-dimming high beams, cold weather setting, mileage... I would try that first then just use manual shifting as that whine is quite annoying.

New guy here, had to share an experience where using a programmer shut off the "cylinder shut-down and ECO mode". Actually made it smoother since the computer didn't keep trying to turn off the cylinders thus creating a smoother part throttle cruise operation.

Also, fuel mileage wasn't harmed in the higher speed ranges, low load and low rpm did seem to become a bit more aggressive. Throttle mapping would help that though.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee Hum

You can go into the menu options that are controlled by the arrows in the steering wheel. Where you switch the display from KPH to fuel economy or tire pressure. Anyhow there is a place where you can do setup or preferences. You can take Eco mode off completely as well as things like auto dim for you bright headlamps and such. If you hate the hum, this is a good solution.
