Cool Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - Waterleak Diagnosis Procedures

Hey guys. I have a 2011 GC and have only noticed one water leaking problem. I think it was from hauling a** through a ~8" water puddle, but i'm not entirely sure. It was about 40ft long and I had the gas to the floor . I used to do it all the time in my exploder. Anyway, I heard a slushing sound (water rushing forward) when I applied the breaks at a moderate pressure. Sounded like it was coming from under my driver's seat or above my head. Being lazy, I didn't want to take it to the dealership. I also had ants . So I unbolted my seat, carefully maneuvered it out of the door (but not carefully enough ) and set it on the ground. I popped off the trim around the driver's carpet, and pulled the WET carpet out. I didn't notice the water b/c of rubber floor mats. I pulled out the plastic floor board. There it was, about 4" of water on the inside of the body, under my driver's seat. I pulled the 2 drain plugs and let it drain. Almost like they were expecting water to find it's way there. Its a jeep so some people will treat it like one. anyway, i dried it out with a towel and washed the mildew smelling carpet in the carwash and left it out for a few days to dry. Then Lysoled and febreezed it and replaced. Everything is fine now.

Also, I've taken the back seats and lower rear trim out. The spare tire and shroud, side panels and everything down to the carpet and outside fenders. Everything was dry and had no smell. I had to ditch that crappy sub for a better one. Haven't noticed any other leaks, sorry for rambling, hope my info helps.

No problems with mine. Although I park in a garage and it hasn't rained in six weeks.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - Waterleak Diagnosis Procedures

I have a 2012 and I am having a wet condition in the spare tire well. I've checked the TSB that was provided. I'm in the process of drying the area now and will re-check.

I had water leaking thru the grommet located top center of the rear window. It could be leaking there and flowing into your spare area. Put someone inside and hose that area down and look for entry points.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - Waterleak Diagnosis Procedures

On my 2013 apparently the factory didn't apply ehough sealer to the liftgate weaterstripping so I was getting water into the spare tire well. At least that is what the dealer claims they foun.

I'm glad that I didn't get the sunroof option on my 2011 Jeep. I will still check the vehicle for wet carpets etc.

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - Waterleak Diagnosis Procedures

I have the same leak on rear window. The button to open the rear window now doesn't work. Took to dealer and they ordered new button switch and seal. They said that the water leaking prob caused the shortage in window button. Hopefully new seal prevents any more leaks. 2012- v8 limited.

We just got our GC Laredo back from the dealer after the 4th visit for waterleaks.
1st leak in the RH rear stop light / blinker assy. It was replaced but had to wait for 3 weeks to ship the parts from USA (we live in Oz) and they replaced the rear view camera because it was foggy in the lens.
2nd leak in spare wheel well, with 1" of water sloshing around and said they fixed the leak by putting some sealant in the grommets for the tailgate wiring into the roof.
Guess what, it leaked again and the new rear view camera failed again.
3rd leak they replaced the rear view camera fixed and put some extra sealant around the window rubbers for the tail lift gate.
4th time, a small amount of water in the spare wheel well, and when it was in the workshop, the service manager asked me if i wanted to review the work they had done and showed me personally what they had done to fix it.
He had in his hand the TSB for water leak diagnosis and asked me if i had seen it. I said of course i had, as I emailed a copy to him on the 3rd visit.

So now we wait and see and "hope" i doesn't' leak again.

The GC Laredo is great car, drives heaps better than the Toyota Kluger (Highlander in the USA) I'm driving now (it's a work car, so i don't get a choice.
If only they could build the GC WK2 to be waterproof and have a decent rear view camera !

Re: 2011 Grand Cherokee - Waterleak Diagnosis Procedures

Have been through the .pdf but there is no mention of the rubber seal between the roof and the tailgate on my '12.

Being height impaired I had to stand on a step to even see it but a credit card just slides in the gap and wiggles so is between 1/16 and 1/8" wide (see picture).

Anyone know how to fix this ? (adjust tailgate, replace seal, ???)
