You'd have to be a special kind of stupid to pay zero attention to the beginnings of such a thing with your family in the car, then to do nothing about it until the flames are well on their way to consuming the vehicle.
If it's a systematic problem, I am certain there will be a recall, but the drama is a bit premature.
IMO, I think the OP would not be out of line to ask for a replacement vehicle, maybe even with an extended warranty. However, I STRONGLY recommend to not mention the words "lawyer" or "lawsuit" unless and until Jeep begins being obstinate. That kind of thing will clam them up in nothing flat- they won't negotiate with somebody who is likely to use it in court against them. Start out friendly and in good faith. If they don't reciprocate, there will be plenty of time to play hardball.
