2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

The other day I was driving home from daughters college graduation and turned on my A/C for the first time since last fall or so. While cold air blew out passenger vents the drivers side was warm. It stayed warm no matter how cold I made the temp. This winter I replaced the radio, not sure if I hit anything in that process.

Could it be the blending door, low freon or something else?

thanks

rob

Nice to see that Jeep (FCA) is reading this forum. I do hope they can garner some good ideas/improvements for their vehicles from a good cross section of actual users rather than focus groups .

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Thanks I might take it in was hoping for something possibly simple and cheaper. I do think it is a blender door issue on the drivers side as today it was cooler and had to use the heat in the morning and the drivers side did not seem as warm as passenger

yea, I have the opposite problem, using the heater, I only get heat on the drivers side, (good for me) passenger side gets cold air always, has to be a blend door for mine.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Is it likely a problem with the dual climate controls? The reason I ask is my '11 has dual climate controls on the dash, and while I have never had problems,my buddy has a Limited,(my '11 is a Laredo) and he had that cluster replaced under warranty 2 years ago as although they were both reading identical temperatures the drivers side was always clearly different.Just a thought.I would think a radio change would cause a problem as the clips are very sturdy.Anyhoo, that's my 10 cents worth and hope the input could help the Tech fix your problem in a timely fashion.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Thanks I am going to open it up center console up soon and see if there is anything obvious. It almost seems like the drivers side only uses outside air. I mostly notice it on the top vents. Today when driving to work I had the both sides set at 60 degrees, no A/C just venting through the dash and the air out of the drivers side was warm while passenger side was cooler. MAybe the passnger was outside air and drivers heat, I don't know.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Chances are good your blend door actuator gear has went "kaput". Dirt common problem with early WK2's. The actuator motor might have also stripped gears. The actuator gear is a $2 dealer part and the actuator motor is about $30 on Amazon and Ebay. The radio bezel, trim under steering wheel, and trim on left side of console will need removed to replace. The motor and gear are mounted to the air box roughly behind the A/C controls on the left side. Replacement is easy and straightforward... but it's tight work quarters and removing trim that adds up a bit of labor time.

Don't let any dealer talk try to talk you into replacing the $1000+ air box. It's not necessary. The blend doors inside are usually perfectly fine.

There's an excellent tutorial on how to fix this problem on the drivers side in these forums.

Good luck!

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Thank you very much. I will be getting to this project after opening the pool, removing a large rock, laying additional brickwork around the pool and finish replacing the brakes on my son's car.

Too much to do too little time. I thought it could not be that bad.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Here's some other "pointers" when you get ready to tackle this.

You may have just knocked the drivers side actuator motor wires loose when you replaced the radio. Of course check that first.

If not... then you're looking at doing the following.

Make sure you buy a Mopar OEM actuator motor. Don't buy the Dorman aftermarket one that's about $10 less. The Dorman has a slightly different gear ratio... but just enough difference that it will not calibrate automatically once installed. That will involve a dealer visit to calibrate and fix. The Mopar OEM motor will calibrate correctly since the A/C system is factory programmed for it... so no issue.

You may find the original motor to still be good... but I wouldn't suggest tackling this repair without a known good one. They are usually not easy to find locally. You DEFINITELY want to start this repair with a good actuator gear at minimum. That's what originally broke in the first place and MAY have stripped the motor gears when it went "south".

If the drivers side seems to be blowing about 72F...then that's a good sign that the blend doors are good. The blend door shaft turns easily and basically rotates to the "middle" position due to gravity when there's no resistance placed on it by the now in "pieces" actuator gear. If it was currently stuck in heat or AC... then you'd be possibly looking at an expensive air box replacement.

Let the car cool down before doing this. The heater core lines in front of the actuator unit will burn your hands and knuckles if hot.

Took me about two hours to fix with most of that time trying to figure out how to remove trim panels. Installing the actual motor and gear only took a few minutes. I just went ahead and installed a new motor. Didn't even bother testing the old one.

If you can do this fix on the drivers side... then the passengers side is a piece of cake. Only have to remove the glove box to access the motor and actuator to the left of it.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

Thanks joplin. I would have to say the drivers side blows luke warm all the time. I actually have been keep the dash vents closed. I will look to get a new motor would rather go in there once. By the way could this be covered under CPO warranty. I got another 1k left before it expires.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC driver A/C problem

does not look like it too bad.

the Jeep has been good otherwise. I overall like it but I am thinking of the 8-speed tranny and how much better that will be
