Perhaps this helps in clarifying the situation:

I have been fighting with this issue since June (misfire sensation under light acceleration) and had the car inspected, tested by a number of engineers, and no solution has been found (applied all TSBs for driveability, which made the gearbox itself smoother in changing gear, but resolved none of these sypmtoms).

So, how does the misfire/surge/shudder sensation manifests itself?

1) In 4th and 5th gear once the torque converter has locked up
2) Whilst accelerating softly enough so that the car does not unlock the torque converter and changes down a gear
3) From 40mph+, between 2000-2500 rpm
4) In all modes, Auto/sport etc, as well as in D or Autostick (when allegedely the MDS is not operational)
5) When driving at 70-80mph, I also get a slight vibration "driving over washboard effect", particularly when driving up a slight incline with the cruise control on.

The technical explanation given to me 3 times now by the service manager who has spent hours in friendly conversations with me:

1) Connecting the laptop to the ODC whilst driving, he could see that under the conditions described above the torque converter keeps locking in/out in succession, within few hundreds of a second

2) This is driven by the MDS software, the MDS needs the torque converter to lock/unlock when engaging/disengaging

3) This command to the torque converter is given also when in Autostick mode, and it exhibits the same behaviour, although the MDS is allegedely not active

4) The issue does not occur in lower gears because the torque converter does not lock up

5) Subsituting the torque converter will not improve things as mechanically there is no slip or any loss in it at all

A Starcase is open at Chrysler to look into the issue.

Do I believe all of this? Well, who knows.
The only doubt that I have is whether the 4x4 system has any play in this at all.
The question back to you folks: do you all have 4x4 and accuse these symptoms?

The Jury has emitted its verdict though: that is the way the car is and will remain. I wanted to switch to the 2012 model, until I found out that the gearbox is exactly the same, just reprogrammed.

Appalling, as a drivetrian issue as serious as this on this type of vehicle is enough to steer customers away. I come from a history of bmw and audis, and no way they exhibilt any form of embedded mechanical imperfection. Some have issue, yes, but they do not come with a drivetrain issue as standard.

All the best,

Daniele

Daniele...Mine also has had several recordings done and data forwarded to Chrys engineering. report back from Chrysler told me this was a "controlled misfire" and nothing can or will be done about it. dealership alos previously informed me that recordings indicated a combination of convertor locking and unlocking along with MDS engagement. I absolutely hate the way this runs under these conditions and would never purchase another. When new this was very slight but has gotten worse and not acceptable for any vehicle.
I also get the vibration when cruising and MDS active. This has also gotten much more noticeable over time.
I am asking owners that are putting on aftermarket air intakes, porting TB's or installing chips to see if this changes any of this. Worst this about it is I drove many different vehicles before buying this 2011 GC and I like most everything else about it then and still do...but this issue is more than just annoying to me.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I have this on a slight or moderate incline between 40-60mph so they have not fixed it with the 2012's

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Has anyone who has had this problem fully examined by their shop gotten any new answers or as one member who went through STAR stated this is normal and not fixable? I have driven a v6 durango and it doesn't seem to do it, is this not a problem on the v6 due to the different engine/tranny.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I have a 2012 WK2 V8 4x4 built 8/17/2011 and I don't notice any symptom like this at all. 1900 miles now.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

At the dealer today and was told as others have been told its a characteristic of MDS. He mentioned that the older WK's do it worse/more pronounced then the new 2011Wk's. I drove a new V6 Durango and it drove so smooth I liked it.. lol But then again that's not apples to apples as the V6 doesn't have MDS nor is it the same tranny. I'll have to test drive a new 2012, we have conflicting stories as some members have the symptoms on the 2012's and as someone just posted today, they don't seem to have it. Although everyones description and encounter is different. What we think is wrong someone else might not even notice or care to think is strange because its normal.

My new 2012 Overland purchased this month has these issues but not to a great extent at least yet. But already I know if its gets worse I will not like it. It only has 500 miles. I will update as time passes.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

My 2012 Overland V8 4x4 has it.
This issue is quickly approaching unacceptable for me, but it sounds like the only options are for them to disable the MDS option and throw decent mileage down the drain, or tell folks to live with it. Still hoping they can solve it through programming before long.

My 2012 Limited 5.7 4x4 also has this problem and seems to be getting worse. Has about 2500 miles. Love the Jeep otherwise, but this is irritating enough to make me look elsewhere for my next vehicle.

For what it's worth I too have a problem with this in my 2012 Overland Summit V8. It's kind of annoying feeling the studder and all.

Now I know why all the auto shows let you test drive the V6, sounds like a deal breaker.

Just wait until Nov 2012 and trade it in for a V6 Turbo, it should out hustle the V8 and get better mileage to boot.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I had a 2011 v8 overland 4x4 that did the same thing. Burned 2 quarts of oil between 5000 mile oil changes, 28000 miles on this car. Traded it in for a 2012 exactly the same vehicle just different color. It's doing the same thing but worse. I'm getting same bs story that this is normal. Its has nothing to do with the mds function. It is a chrysler defect. It's going back in am again, mainly for documentation. This could lead into a class action law suit if enough folks are having this issue. We need to get everyone experiencing this together somehow, possibly though this website. If anyone knows of an attorney that specializes in this matter, would you please ask what needs to be done, if anything. I will be checking too. I've already lost $7000 thru trade in I won't do it again. I have already warned everyone I come into contact that is interested in a gc to avoid it. You guys do the same.
