Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Got some news yesterday. There is a chrysler service bulletin concerning this issue. They are calling it shudder/fishbite. The service dept gave me a copy of the bulletin. There is a supposed fix that might be available feb 2013 for 2102-2013 models, no 2011's. 6 months to fix my new truck but only 6 min to take my $46,000. I don't believe it is a "torque converter" problem. The shop foreman hit it right on the head when he said it was a lean issue. The engine is being starved. To meet epa guidelines and keep fuel ratings higher the computer will not give enough gas during light and medium acceleration. There is no flash reset or fix for this. From what I know, there are no aftermarket programmers either for these trucks, if so let me know. Soooo...in the mean time, enjoy the most annoying ride of your life.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Guys, my 2012 CRD 3.0L diesel does the same at precisely 93kmh (57mph) on a slight uphill gradient when accelerating. Accelerate below that speed right though to beyond 100kmh no issue, its just that magic 93kmh (under slight load pushing the accelerator) This looks like an increasing issue across all power plants that can't be related to the 5.7L petrol leaning out.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I frequently encounter the shutter/stumbling issue at low speeds, under light load, going up hill. It's definately an issue, but it never happens at the dealership. Chrysler used to call it "tip in" for hesitation back in the 70's and 80's.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Mine stumble big time this morning as I entered an on ramp to the Interstate. Drove to the local Jeep dealer. Spoke with the female service writer and her first words were torq converter. I have an appointment Monday morning so they can check the software updates and test drive it. My selling dealer is 2.5 hours away. I noticed it's getting worse driving the interstate on cruise control this evening. The MY11 GC has 25,600 miles on it now.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I am exactly where you are too with my 2011 Overland Summit with the 5.7L and 12K miles. The dealer also calls it "fish bite" and or "surge". It has been to the dealer 6 times for same problem. Torque converter was changed on mine, but no help. had Tech from MI come to Green Bay, WI to look at mine and another 2 that are having the same problems. They know there is an issue, but continue with the "its behaving normally" routine. I know is not and unfortunately, I have had to go the route of pursuing the Lemon Law for the State of WI since Chrysler is not being much of any help. Chrysler states that they are working on the problem for the 2012 and 2013 models, but the 2011 model has an unique axle combination so it will not get any resources. (my interpretation) This also proves that they are aware of the problem even though they say it doesn't exist. This is my first Jeep and its unfortunate that I am having a problem since I really like the vehicle. If any others in the Green Bay, WI area are having this problem, please send me a message at tmvexpress@new.rr.com so we can possibly group together to solve the issue. Thanks

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Jeep service writer said they have the ok to tear the transmission out of it and find out what's wrong next week and order the necessary parts. They've also arranged a rental car for me all week, N/C.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

I will scan the bulletin as soon as I can. Another service manager called me today asking details of my problems. He told me he is going to call chrysler and discuss the issue. Will it do any good? I don't know, but I impressed that I was called about it. I also purchased a Jet performance chip that should arrive this week. When I install it I will give feed back. Man I hope it does the trick.
Also, they keep saying this a tq converter problem, its not. Its a fuel management issue. Tq shudder is going to happen prior to a gear change, not at an rpm where the transmission would not normally shift up or down, especially with steady pressure on accelerator. When Im heavy on the gas, there is no shudder.
My 2011 only did it in overdrive and was extremely hard to recreate at the dealer, my 2012 does it all the time. Also the only diff btwn 2011 to 2012 is an extra gear ratio when manually shifting. Transmission, gears, transfer case, etc is all the same. They may have fine tuned the computer for better mpg 2012 which may be causing more 2012 vehicles to show this problem, ???

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Oh another 2 cents, lemon law will not do anything about this, nor will class action law suit. This is not a safety issue, just a nuisance and chrysler IS aware, so they "are working on a fix", so they say. Hang in there, maybe will can get this fixed. If not, I'm done with chrylser, I'll go to the next lousy car manuf.

Re: 2011 Jeep GC Surge/Shudder/ engine miss sensation

Left mine at the dealer yesterday and today. They could only detect what some might call minor misfire and nothing else. I took it for a ride, but couldn't detect the more detectable stumble. I turned in the Hertz loaner and started driving home and the moderate stumble occurred twice within 1,000' before and after a traffic light, around 33-35 mph after coasting in traffic and getting back on a very light throttle. Go figure.
