Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Here is a video that someone posted today that shows a video of a 2011 Jeep Wrangler fording less than 10" of water that suffered the same hydro lock. Jeep is declining warranty. But this clearly shows there must be some sort of design flaw.
Here's the video:

The other thread is found here:
I know it is not WK2 but was the driver too tough or the Jeep wasn't tough enough.

I hope you can use this as some sort of evidence and get yours fixed under warranty.

Sorry, but the guy who owns that Wrangler is an idiot. Pause the video at 23 seconds and take a minute to look at the freeze frame. You can make an argument that a Jeep shouldn't get damaged by driving through 10 inches of water (which in itself is debatable--that could have been more than 10 inches of water), but that guy somehow managed to make that water go well above his roofline. You can also clearly see a ton of water splashing up behind his grille. Posting his video will probably hurt him much more than help him. He's basically proving that his engine was destroyed by his own foolish actions.

This jeep (the wrangler) died in the water, like I would expect from hydrolock. The OP drove 675 miles a week later. I doubt it was the same thing.

Also, that wrangler video doesn't look too different from the Jeep waterfording commercial as far as speed and splash height. I wonder how many grand cherokees Jeep used up to film that commercial before they had one make it out....

Does anyone know the owner of this wrangler? We do not know the story and if he had any mods like a cai which would not offer protection from fording.

I doubt he had any mods at all. The Jeep was brand new and still had the dealer plates on it.

I realize that, but the odds are good that this Jeep was bone stock. Could it have mods? Of course, but it's unlikely.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

My Thanks to Sparro for the posting as I have an engineer who works for me with a 2011 Wrangler - he will be quite interested in this video clip. And again, I emphasize that mine went almost 700 miles home - doesn't look like this guy made it past the puddle. Clearly, the change to the air intake is something to watch over the months as the winter snow packs are encountered by these 2011 vehicles.

I know it was just wishful thinking. I still just find it hard to believe that crossing hydro locked the engine. I think if it did and wasn't a scam against jeep that all the events happened perfectly to cause the hydro lock.

If I lived close enough I would try with mine just to duplicate that crossing should be safe.

I think the air intake is the main concern. I don't know enough about the different Jeep models to know where/how the air intake tube is located, but maybe things have changed recently with the newer designs. Either way, it would be a good idea to have the intake routed away from any potential splashing water when you're building a vehicle with offroad intentions or even an offroad image.
