MSCA, this is the point I tried to make with Phil Jansen when we discussed this by phone. Especially if Jeep is going to advertise stream fording. The new wrangler's air intake appears to be on the passenger side, while the Grand Cherokee's is on the driver side.

Or maybe Germans....since the vehicles we're seeing now were designed when the Germans owned Chrysler.

It's unbelievable to me that the engineers who designed the air intake wouldn't do everything possible to prevent hydro-lock on the new Jeeps. I mean, I don't expect them to put a snorkle on them from the factory or anything, I'm just saying that the intakes could have been designed in a way that would make it very difficult to ingest water.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Calling all mods! Any aftermarket solution that doesn't look like an overgrown periscope?

Maybe a small baffle or zigzag with a drain hole on the bottom of the intake?

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

there has to be a medium somewhere......

close the intake off too much and you choke the engine...which leads to less power...open it up too much and rain water causes hydro-lock. Know what I mean?

And to be honest....WE have TRUELY have no idea what happened in 2011 GC situation. And the Wrangler situation....that just looked like true dumbness(is that a word...LOL?) to me

They could have done what I've seen done on many other SUVs.....route the air intake from the engine bay into one of the front fenders (up high, slightly below hood level) and then make a nice, big opening for the air to go in. Then they can build baffles inside the fender to make water nearly impossible to reach the end of the air intake. That way you have unrestricted cool air (not heated engine compartment air) to ingest without worrying about water.

Did you even read what I wrote? It doesn't restrict air at all, only water. The baffles are in the fender, not the intake tube. Other vehicles already use a similar system with no ill effects.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Stopped at the gas station yesterday and next to me was a WK2 3.6 V6 and the owner had the front hood up. He did not look very happy and I asked him if there is any problem. He said that after driving in a rain and running into deeper paddles in road construction area bottom half of the engine was wet and dirty with muddy spray marks. I notticed that there was huge gap between the radiator and front of the engine approx of 12"- 14" just by looking. He did not have any shield protectors down low to cover this gap. I am sure the HEMI is a bigger engine and will not have this big oppening but should there be some sort of plastic protector to cover this gap in the V6. If the water gets into this space the cooling fan could push it around and the moisture could damage electronics or gets in the places enough to void your warranty.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

I noticed the same large opening on mine, even with the off road package, ther is a huge amount of open space for water to be splashed up. The Hemi's must fill up most of this open space. I'd sure like to hear from other's with the new 3.6L what they have experienced in heavy downpours.
