I read exactly what you wrote....... So all these baffles and routing through fenders would restrict airflow? LOL

Let me put it to you this way.....no car company is going to design an air intake that will restrict the intake air even under extended wide open throttle. There will still be plenty of air available no matter what. That said, simple baffles built into the fender can in fact help prevent water ingestion while allowing more than enough air to enter the engine.

Now if you're talking about designing some kinda of ram-air system, that's a different story. But anyone who knows anything about engines knows that ram-air systems are more about marketing hype than functionality.

In the meantime, for whatever reason Jeep seems to have ignored the fact that some buyers will drive through water and treat their vehicles like offroad rigs. My suggestion of a simple baffle design is already present on plenty of SUVs and is a proven design that works. If you want to argue about, I suggest you read up on the subject and educate yourself.

Mine has a plastic splash guard down there. It is visible in the following photo- note the plastic piece right below the front frame rail (this photo is with the lower fascia removed):

If you have the skid plates installed, the splash guard covers everything back to the plates. Maybe they were anticipating that those without the off road groups (and therefore the skid plates) weren't likely to be going through water that's more than hub deep.

I have driven through some impressive puddles. Never once had a driveability issue. Quite honestly, water hitting the bottom of the engine doesn't bother me one bit. I've never seen a vehicle have problems with the underside getting wet. The only concern is keeping water out of the intake, and you'd have to get the front WAY under water in order for that to begin to be an issue.

I'm still not seeing a problem with the WK2 design. IMO, the OP's issue was a bad con rod, not actual hydrolock (as has been pointed out).

You might be on to something here. I have the 5.7 with the OR package and, I gotta tell you, the skid plates underneath cover almost everything. This would certainly prevent water ingestion from underneath.

Unless, of course, it was completely submerged.

The air intake is designed basically the same as it was in my KJ. I forded streams and splashed through large puddles a lot in that car, never got a drop in the intake.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

So did Chrysler ever fold and replace the engine, or anything??

I'm in the market for a new 2011 Overland, but this does concern me, the design of the air box is more suited for a sedan...Mercedes...

My old 98' Cherokee sport had the opening on the bottom of the air box, and my 05' xterra has the baffle inside the drivers side wheel well as earlier suggested, which I have found to be almost impossible to swamp!

Wish I could say they had, but alas, I'm going to have to claim it on my insurance, as Chrysler still maintains it was hydrolock. $7500 for a new engine. Good luck.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Would you be able to get an extended warranty on the new engine to have it protected for the 100,000 miles or are you stuck with the 12/12K?

I am not sure how successful you will be with your insurance company. I would at a minimum file a complaint with the BBB and send a letter to your state's attorney general. I do not think the dealership has conclusive evidence of hydro-lock as the cause.

Best of luck with it.
