Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Hydro-lock doesn't happen some time later on...it happens right away. If more than a small amount of water enters the combustion chamber, it will hydro-lock as soon as the corresponding piston goes into the compression stroke. And since water doesn't compress, well, something has to give.

Something definitely sounds fishy with the dealer's diagnoses. I think they're really trying to screw you.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Thanks to all for the comments. Below are some photos as requested. I will say, I saw no drain paths when I looked at the air plenum. Also, I would like to say that I understand the balance needed by the hot air intake, water ingestion and snow pack melt to the air intake system. This was explained to me in depth by Phil Jansen.

As far as how water got into the air intake, I wish I knew. There were significant thunderstorms we drove thru, and as I said some puddles to get to the house, but no more than 12" deep. Phi did say that while they test in a level water trough of 20" depth, with a ramp in and out, there could be a situation where at the wrong angle, water might get in when it is less than 20". All I know is that I did not drive in anything that looks like the "Jeep Grand Cherokee Stream Fording" commercial.

I will say, that before this happened, I truely enjoyed the vehicle. It is much better than the 2010 version for a quiet ride, comfort and cornering. I would love to see Jeep make this right, and also investigate how to eliminate the water before it gets into the engine. As a product engineer in the automotive sector (Tier 1), with 30+ years experience, and 17 patents, I have several ideas that I have used in the past to drain water from components, and would be glad to share them. I really would like to see this succeed in the market place -and I don't want to see Jeep end up on ABC's 20/20 the way BMW did a few weeks ago with their engine problems and a massive recall.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Agreed I think the air intake in the front of the vehicle isn't a good idea on a 4X4. It is up really high, but the side intakes in the fenders protect the intake better from water being ingested.

Maybe there is something that Chrysler knows and that might be the reason they tried to cover it up by adding the weatherstrip.

Here is a picture of the intake drain hole. It is right below the filter at the lowest point. I haven't seen many cars without them. Mine is the HEMI, but I would assume the V6 is in the same location. The previous generation WK had a huge reservoir for any water that might make it into the intake.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

We need more information about conditions just before the engine failed (the 700 mile trip pretty well excludes the earlier 12" puddle as a factor unless there is something really odd here).

Was the actual failure during a pouring rainstorm with deep puddles? Day or nighttime, etc.

Seems odd that your dealer and Jeep execs would not stand behind a problem like this...provided all the operating information is up on the table. Have they given you their "final" answer rejecting your claim?

Anything in writing from them? I would want.....no DEMAND a written rejection of my claim.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Can you please explain to me where in your pictures above there is a broken conrod?

I clearly see a hole in the sump, but I can't see a rod thats let go? I can see all the conrods except one..... it's close to Top Dead Centre, and the hole in the sump isn't corresponding to where I'd expect to see a broken rod.

The hole in the sump, when you inspect it does it look like something's come through from inside? Or impact from under the car?

I was expecting to see MUCH more carnage within the engine.

And, the other guys are spot on, if it's going to shit itselg from a hydrolock, it'll do it immediately, unless somehow miraculously the water has sat in the intake somewhere for hundreds of miles and then somehow found it's way to the engine..... massively unlikely!

We're here to help bro! This is SHIT.

^ Big ditto! Immediate failure is the result of hydro lock and the rod would be bent. A holed block sounds like high rpm running and a big-end rod cap or bolt fatigued unless you heard rod knock before the failure which would be bearing failure.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Sorry to hear this. Like others have said, engine fails at the time of hydro-lock occurance not later.

Not clear, were you driving in a severe down pour when the engine went?

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

this is interesting reading.........tell us more about what water puddles you were driving through ?? paved or off road ?? beachside ?? when in your trip did you drive thru this 12 inches of water ?? what volume of water was in the reservoir ?

how did you know it was 12 inches ?? it is very hard to judge water depth driving through it......you almost half to get out and measure it, this would be even more significant at night ??? your jeep stopped at around midnight right ??

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

I have WJ and I have no idea how air intake is design on the WK2 but here is a pic posted by other member in different post but shows the intake in the FRONT???? driver side just under the hood on the HEMI WK2. This is on the oncoming traffic side and in hevy rain oncoming car can spray water over the hood. It just takes perfect angle for some water to get in the intake. Looks like bad design to me.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

Oh come on... lol, that's not a bad design, and spray isn't going to affect the engine!

Cars have been designed with similar inakes for years. The air needs to go through an indirect path prior to getting to the engine, and there IS a water drain in the bottom of the airbox (for what small amounts DO make it that far)

The design of the intake and airbox just isn't a valid argument for engine damage, not when talking about rain/mist/traffic spray...... settle down fellas
