Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

I would like to know the specifics of when the break down occurred. Any noise? Big oil puddle or small? Did it happen gradually or instantly??
Some more specifications on the final event per say will probably help a lot.

Odd question but, was there an air filter installed?

Or that Chrysler had the data from the Tech II ( or whatever Chrysler calls their data recording computer in the vehicle), and saw the data showing the fault codes at the time it blew up, and nothing that I did to cause it. Or how about my sister-in-law driving her 10 year old GMC Yukon thru the same puddle with no problem. Or that her full grown yellow Labrador waded thru the same puddle, and it only came up to her stomach, which is 12". How did I drive home 700 miles over 12 hours, in dry weather, only to have the catastrophic failure a week after the rainstorm and driving thru the puddle? Why have I been so patient, working thru the warranty system for 6 weeks, continuing to make car payments and not even a loaner car to drive. Frankly, I just wanted others to know that there may be something wrong with this new design engine AND hear about the "wonderful" customer service I'm getting from Chrysler!

IF all you wanted to do is tell us how you were treated then why all the rest.
its as if you are trying to prove something to us. i think they should give you a new engine. done.

what do they say when you throw all the claims as you have above? if they continue to say it was your fault i would hire a lawyer. and the first thing any GOOD lawyer will tell you is GET ON THE INTERNET and delete every reference to this.

OR are you here hopin g maybe some publicity might help your case???? that some chyrsler guy might see you plea and help??

or are you just going to fork over your hard earned money to the same crooks that did this to you in the first place?? THAT DONT MAKE SENSE FOR SURE.

so what are your intentions/plans? a yard ornamanet? sale it? fix it? accident clain with your insurance company??? thats prolly it. Jeep f'ed you but the Gecko is taking care of it?

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

The Pentastar is all-new, with a block that's lighter than usual to reduce materials cost and to improve mileage. So this thrown rod is of special interest, as possibly, like the block, it was also made to be lightweight -- lighter alloy, thinner shaft, or both.

This guy's situation is of real concern, if only because it raises a huge red flag concerning the WK2's warranty. But #1 is whether there is something flawed in the Pentastar's rod design or alloy. If so, higher-ups at Chrysler should be scrambling to sort this out, not brushing it off. Cover-ups always backfire.

Anybody have access to warranty records to see whether this is a one-up, or whether there have been other broken rods we haven't heard about?

A lot of people here are drawing broad conclusions about the WK2, Chrysler, warranties, and the facts behind this incident.

One guy had one engine in one WK2 break. There are somewhere around 50,000 WK2's on the road now.

Show me a pattern (like, oh, how about TWO of these incidents?), and I'll be concerned.

Re: 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6L Pentastar V6 BLOWN-UP ENGINE!

I beat the hell out of that little 3.6L..... a lot more than i'm sure any of you guys would do to your personal cars and nothing popped, broke, exploded, hiss, or chirped. Right now this is just one problem...... a major one but a problem never the less. Just learn from his mistakes and never tell a dealership that you drove in water.

The reason I have mentioned is the conversation I had with my friend.
He works in CNC machine shop that makes water pump and trany details for GMC and Chrysler. They are getting rough pre-cast and making the fine detail on the CNC. I was very exided about the new Jeep, like all of us in this forum, and have mentioned to him that I am looking for reason to upgrade my '04 WJ with WK2. He told me that if I can see the pre-cast material they are getting, most with micro holes, I would never think about buying one. After that I have decided to wait for now. It would be very bad if he is right and bad material is reason for this breakdown. Really hope this is a single case.
China steel. God help us. The WK2 looks, feels, and goes great! Will it prove reliable

Back to the topic, it's not clear what the root cause was. However, if I was the OP I'd be concerned about getting an engine rebuild done and not a whole new engine dropped in (warranty or not). It would appear from the carnage that the cylinder wall would be damaged. I wouldn't trust the Chryco grease monkeys to do a proper re-build. I'd barely trust them to drop in a new motor, but the math is much better on that.

Aluminum engine blocks typically have sleeves installed in the cylinder bores because bare aluminum just doesn't hold up well enough to last very long. There is also newer technology used in some engines where the aluminum bores have a hardened coating instead of sleeves. Does anyone know if the Pentastar engine uses sleeves or a coating?

BTW, a good mechanic (engine builder) can rebuild an engine better than it was when new. They can carefully balance and blueprint it, similar to the way race engines are built.

Spot on. I wouldn't rule out a defective con rod, but it's going to take more than one to worry me. I'm at 5200 miles with zero powertrain issues; the low mileage on the powerplant in question makes me wonder about infant mortality- the bad parts will usually die pretty quickly.

Cast steel liners according to Pentastars.com.
