2011 Laredo : Dealer says change heater core

So last week I have noticed more or less no heat in my Jeep. I took it to the dealer in the night and picked it up the next day.

The dealer is saying it's the heater core. They did the following
- Coolant check
- Readjusted the vent door's on dash

The tech determined it was the heater core as after these checks were made the Jeep at idle had no heat but when driven at 2000 and higher rpm the heat was working fine.

When I picked it up (Saturday morning) the heat was working fine through Sunday night (was warmer then normal) Until today.

I had the Jeep running this evening for about 20 min and it was cold , went for a drive around the neighborhood and sure enough was warm again.

Normal I would take their advice but my vehicle is out of the basic warranty by 2 months (56,000km)

The service manager did manager to get the repairs done for me under goodwill but I am responsible for half ($560.00cad)

I have until Friday to make a decision, what do you guys think ? could it be the heater core or should I be checking something else?

Thanks

Sounds more like a thermostat. I assume that's been checked.

Re: 2011 Laredo : Dealer says change heater core

Have seen a sticking hot/cold air blend door do just that. Are other things such as low coolant and restrictions that can cause that but since it can come and go, my bet would be for a sticking blend door.

Do not know since I do not have the dealer diagnosis tools but suspect he may be able to read the blend door position (not the command, the actual position). Might ask about the HVAC Actuator Calibration Function.

Re: 2011 Laredo : Dealer says change heater core

thanks for the suggestions,

Taking it to my work this Thursday and see if the ex Chrysler tech can figure it out.

Noticed something on the weekend. Vents on the driver side were blowing cold air, but on the passenger side and in the rear it was warm.

Hard to get this checked as it's my wife's truck and she doesn't drive 5 speed (my car)

Could be a problem with the pump too.

Re: 2011 Laredo : Dealer says change heater core

There are two hot/cold blend doors, one for each side. Is how you can adjust each side differently. This is sounding even more like an air flow issue and not a heater core.

Am getting very tempted to buy the Autoenginuity PC scan tool with the Chrysler extension package, bit pricy but can display things like the blend door position

Just looked and has Left Blend Actuator Position & Right Blend Actuator Position. Certainly the dealer can check the same thing.

Re: 2011 Laredo : Dealer says change heater core

took it to work and they back flushed the system and checked the thermostat.

At the moment everything is working good. One of the techs at work is going to try and get the Chrysler diagnosis tool.

Will keep this thread updated
