2011 Overland w/Blown Engine 300 miles

Hi everyone, I recently purchased a brand new 2011 Jeep GC Overland with a 5.7 Hemi thinking this would be a great addition to our 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited parked in our driveway. I've owned the vehicle since August 1st 2011 (3 days ago from the time i'm writing this) I was extremely excited to get rid of my 06 ford explorer EB. I picked the Jeep up this past Monday and drove into work the following day with no problems. Since it is new and paid 50k for it...my instinct is to baby the hell out of it. I commute on a highway with maximum speeds of 50mph. So i repeated this process on Wednesday morning/evening and then today (Thursday morning/evening. My family and I decided to go out to dinner this evening, which of course we were going to take the new Overland with 300miles on it. I decided to trick my 7 year old with the remote starter while we were walking down our walkway. She walked around the back of the vehicle and said, "why is there white smoke coming out of the exhaust pipes. Thinking that it was condensation, I laughed at her then looked up at her and to my amazement I couldn't see her because of the smoke. To make a long story short....knowing this was either a head gasket or blown motor (noticed a bit of blue in the smoke which smelled like burning metal) I imediately called the Jeep dealer I bought the rig from. I spoke with the owner of the area dealerships of whom was very cooperative immediately dispatching their service manager and sales manager to drive up to my house to drop a 2009 loaner Jeep GC off to me. I told him what happened when they arrived on site and he started the vehicle up and walked around the back of it and was like..whoa something is definitely wrong with the engine (while shaking his head). So I called back the owner of the dealership and told him the problem...and demanded (in a nice way, knowing it's not their fault for the defect) a new Jeep GC Overland with the same color and package knowing that I no longer trust the current vehicle even if the engine is replaced on it. I know this has happened to someone else based on threads I've been reading. I'm hoping Jeep/Chrysler/Fiat pull through for me and honor the fact that I paid 50k for one of their vehicles that has lasted me 3 days (300 miles).

Wow! 300 miles? Lemon man...it happens. I'm really sorry but you're covered under warranty and hopefully they do the right thing and get you a 2012 since it might be tough to get you a 2011 with the options and colors you want being it's the end of the model year.

I'll definitely keep you guys posted. I'll find out in the morning after the flat bed arrives. My neighbors think I own 3 jeeps now.

Re: 2011 Overland w/Blown Engine 300 miles

A lot of us have a 5.7L. Sometimes there are defects! I have a 5.7L and I love it to death! Obviously something is wrong, but it will be taken care of. Take advantage of getting a new Jeep and trust me you'll love it. This happened to my dad when he first bought his Range Rover Sport. We drove it off the lot and three months later it needed a new Engine. It was covered under the Factory Warranty and he's love it since. I know it's 300 miles and that's very worrying. But it seems like it will most likely be taken care of.

What a horror story! I hope you get a new 2012 to make up for this lemon.

Re: 2011 Overland w/Blown Engine 300 miles

this is most likely what is known in the manufacturing world as an "infant mortality failure" It happenss in ALL industry to all manufacturers. I have had pumps and dc motors installed on a shutdown and they fail in the first hour....thankfully we have back ups. That cant happen here...but it happens all the time. There is a greater chance for a part /motor etc to fail in its infancy. The chance is about equal to a worn out part/motor etc.

Sorry to hear that. I just had a 5.7 blow in my 300c with 63k miles on it....ridiculous. In general, these have been strong engines though.

Re: 2011 Overland w/Blown Engine 300 miles

The OP has not confirmed that the motor is blown, only that it is smoking, so we are jumping to conclusions.
As I have seen several people mention that their cars smoke on a certain angle, it could well be a faulty component. Best to wait until a mechanic can test it and then report.

Wow, this gives me some second thoughts on purchasing a GC this year. I was going to get a 12 with the 5.7L, obviously i hope this is a very isolated incident

Re: 2011 Overland w/Blown Engine 300 miles

Glad you were in your driveway when this happened, and not on the road, or some more remote location!

It's got to be a very isolated incident. Hope your replacement arrives sooner than expected.

Good luck!
