2011 Overland with headlight issue

I have been using the search function, but I cannot seem to find a good "how to" posting, or DIY repair outlined on this board.

So: my left head light (on the 2011 O'land) is shining a nice red color, making it tough to see at night, especially in fog.

From what I have read, I believe that I have a bulb that is failing. I would like to tackle this job on my own, as I do not really see the need to take my WK2 to a tech to replace a light bulb. ...except... the head lights on my truck are referred to as "not serviceable" in the owners manual.

As reference, I am pretty accomplished in the mechanical world, and have all of the tools that will be needed. With that said--

I have 3 questions:

1) Any preferred sources by the JG board for the (what I believe to be) HID bulbs? If I replace 1, I will replace both sides.

2) What is this bulb called? Is it a Bi-xenon HID light bulb?

3) It looks like I have to pull the light assembly to do this. Is there a project chronicled on this board on doing this "DIY" project?

Your input is appreciated.

Re: 2011 Overland with headlight issue

I have replaced the DRLs in my 2011 with LEDs, this was a relatively easy job which can be done on the car, the main h/lamp globes HID are another matter and some experience is required for safety, seeing you have an issue with a seemingly failing main globe would the best plan be to consult the Jeep dealer and request a replacement under warranty?

I actually received two brand new headlamps under warranty ( was in its last month) because I noticed a milky look that was starting to appear in the lenses and burn marks at the top of the reflector lenses in DRL lamps. The new replacements are much better with a noticeable better quality reflector, the LED DRL globes are much cooler and don't burn the reflector while giving a better brighter white light.

To do the work yourself and if you need to remove the headlamp you will need to remove the complete front bumper, same as if you want to replace or remove the grille, the headlamp lower bolt is then accessible, if you have a mechanical aptitude as you say it is pretty straight forward, there is a PDF available for this procedure on WK2 Jeeps, some new parts are needed i.e 4 plastic rivets. Hope this helps.

Re: 2011 Overland with headlight issue

Thank you for the part number.

I do not want to "one-up" anyone, but I grabbed my manual and took a quick look at the manual, and it says the following:

Headlamp - High Intensity Discharge (HID)
Bulb number Service at Authorized dealer (**)

**The headlamps are a type of high-voltage discharge tube. High voltage can remain in the circuit even with the headlamp switch off and the Key Fob removed. Because of this, you should not attempt to service a headlamp bulb yourself. If a headlamp bulb fails, take your vehicle to an authorized dealer for service.

It does say in that same chart "Headlamp - Low Beam H11"

This seems to be a bit of a paradox. So, I know a bulb needs to be replaced, and with the amber color coming from the headlight assy makes me believe that I am going to be replacing the HID bulb ... but I am not sure ...

Now that I have crossed 83k miles, I am not able to "replace under warranty"

Any other jeep-er replace the HID bulb and chronicle it on the forum?

It cannot be that hard...

Re: 2011 Overland with headlight issue

Mate like I said before its easy if you know what you are doing. The manual does list both as it depends what yours was fitted with. If it has hid's it wont have the h11. The d1s are available outside jeep from narva and hella and you dont need to go to jeep to replace them.
