2011 WK2 Strange Squeaking after Offroading

Hey guys,

I had quite an exciting weekend out on the trails but now my Jeep is making some unsettling noises... wondering if you guys can help me diagnose. Couple things to note: I got my Jeep stuck quite precariously on a 45 angle and had to have it winched out. It probably put quite a bit of stress on the wheels. I also just had a RRO leveling kit installed last week. The noise doesn't start up unless I've been driving for about 20 minutes.

I captured the sound on video here: (probably need headphones to hear).

Any thoughts? Friend of mine thinks it's probably a wheel bearing or universal joint bearing...

How does it sound at slow speeds over a speed bump? Sounds like the same noise I hear on rides that get upgraded from rubber to polyurethane bushings. Sway bar bushings for example.

That sounds exactly the same as my car after I jacked it up from the wrong spot up front. I damaged the triangular crossmembers just behind the front wheels (and obviously inboard a bit). They have next to no clearance, so it wouldn't be surprising that they may have been affected by your adventures.

There are a few threads about these crossmembers... I'll try to pull up a link.

Cheers,
Steve

Barboots, thanks for pulling that thread. Looks like people in that thread had a variety of problems. I'm trying to find that spot pictured in the thread above the control arms. I can't tell what I'm looking at, is that the horseshoe shaped control arm above the wheel?

Also, listening to that sound clip -- doesn't quite sound like mine. Mine sounds like a flock of geese or something that is more like stairs creaking. I'm going to take it into the place I had the leveling kit installed and see if its a loose bolt on the suspension...

Re: 2011 WK2 Strange Squeaking after Offroading

Initially, mine wasn't as regular... it was more when I entered a driveway, accelerated from stop, or braked. But it was becoming more regular as I waited for the parts (which not everyone has felt necessary to change out).

Slide your head under the car immediately behind the front wheel. Look forward... the metal plate is not far behind the centre axis of the front wheel and is pretty much immediately rearward of the CV joint / axle.

The part is horizontal and flush with the bottom of the car. It's a three pointed star more than a triangle, and the problem is the rubber bush in the middle is rubbing. If you still can't find it I'll take a location photo.

I could make the noise stop by spraying WD40 on the area (which I cleaned off straight after). Maybe this would help determine if it's the same issue with yours?

Good luck... it's a bummer coming home with trail damage!

Cheers,
Steve

Steve, I must be completely blind. I've popped under the truck several times now and nothing that looks like a triangular plate is jumping out at me. A picture would be imminently helpful at this point...

OK... maybe it's more like a crazy boomerang

Centre of shot.

Re: 2011 WK2 Strange Squeaking after Offroading

Thanks Steve, that helps a lot. So are you saying that there is a bushing on the other side of the "boomerang" that is rubbing? Behind that bolt at the apex of the "boomerang"?

Re: 2011 WK2 Strange Squeaking after Offroading

Yes to it being on the other side.

As far as where exactly... now you're testing my memory. I actually thought it was near the stamped hole... but now I'm wondering what could have held it there? Maybe it's affixed to the body side??? Anyway, you can feel it if you poke around the bracket. It's probably 50mm diameter...

Cheers,
Steve

Re: 2011 WK2 Strange Squeaking after Offroading

Hey Barboots,

Sorry to dig up this old dead thread but... just a quick update and question. I figured out the source of the squeaking eventually (it was part of the lower control arm that got bent and was rubbing metal against metal). That actually went away as the metal contact wore away, but now I'm getting another squeak that I think is coming from my "boomerang crossmember". I've been able to isolate it by spraying lithium grease in the area and the sound stops (only to come back a couple weeks later.)

So, I would like to replace that part (and maybe the bushing as well). Do you know what this part is actually called? I'm having a hell of a hard time finding it in the OEM part catalogs. Thanks.
