2011 WK2 Summit: Hill Decent

Good Morning!

I was driving down a steep winding hill this past weekend and I wanted use the Hill decent feature to maintain speed and it just flashed at me.

What am I doing wrong? I found nothing on this in the owners manual.

Thank you!

Re: 2011 WK2 Summit: Hill Decent

You have to put it in 4 wheel low first. Then you can put it in hill descent. The vehicle has to be in neutral first and traveling from 1 to 3 MPH to put it in 4 wheel low. The manula says it may not happen on the first try or 2 as the gears try to catch up. My first try the other day only needed one try though.

Thank you JR.

I will try that out. Kinda odd though...that I would have to change gears to neutral, then switch to low 4WD and then neutral don't you think? I would think there would be an easier way...

There might be but I just found that in the manual the other day and it worked. I wouldnt be suprised if a combo in the center knob would wprk,, hadnt tryed any of those yet for this process.

Re: 2011 WK2 Summit: Hill Decent

Thought I might add that the hill descent control is really for off-road use only, i.e. the need for 4LO being a requirement. Max speed is 20mph or less or less than 20mph, I forget. I have heard of people expecting to use this on normal steep grades on paved roads, mountain twisties, say to keep the vehicle at 55mph instead of it being gravity pulled to 70+. It just isn't designed for that.

My 2012 Overland V8 4x4 is seemingly unaffected by gravity. Even in neutral, the grade on a hill has to be extremely steep before it will accelerate.

Maybe the 2012's have some sort of newtonian dampening system that changes the apparent mass of the vehicle that the 2011's didn't have.

Mine seems to be impacted by gravity well enough. Controllable enough with the lower gears on 35-40mph roads. But on 55-60mph roads with a 7% grade, mine wants to slide up to 70+.

One thing I was curious about last week is whether or not the brake lights come on when the hill descent kicks in. I know it does with the adaptive cruise, but a couple of times I noticed while in 4LO, 1st gear heading down a nice steep portion of the trail I would throttle up to 7-10mph or so so, come to a rock or something, let off the throttle and that hill descent would lurch the vehicle rapidly down to 1-2mph. I did have another vehicle behind me, not close by any means, but I never thought to ask them.

Re: 2011 WK2 Summit: Hill Decent

My 2012 GC Ltd. V6 does just fine on the really steep Colorado mountain downhill treks. Just tap it down to 3rd or 2nd gear and it has as much or more engine braking as my 2005 4.7 V8. However, don't wait until your rolling downhill art high rate of speed in Drive and only then think about downshifting. Plan ahead a little and anticipate downshifting.
