2012 GC: Alternator Melted!

Was driving home the other day when the Battery Charge warning light came on. I pulled over and turned off the car. The manual says if that light comes on, stop driving and get car serviced. I was about a mile from home so I figured I could get home, especially since the warning light didn't come on immediately when I started up again.
Got home and smelled burning. Opened hood to find smoke and some small flames. Turns out the alternator had shorted out, causing a small fire which melted the alternator and damaged the battery and starter. Waiting to find out if insurance will cover.

Re: 2012 GC: Alternator Melted!

That sounds like something that Warranty should absolutely cover, including replacing any other parts that were damaged.

Re: 2012 GC: Alternator Melted!

The alternator should not be covered as it was a mechanical breakdown. Any damage caused by the subsequent fire should be a covered loss.

I know many adjusters 'forget' to exclude the part that caused the damage.

As already mentioned, call Chrysler just to see .

Will call Chrysler. Basic warranty expired about 3,000 miles ago. No extended warranty because it is a lease, due back in February. Thanks for the feedback.

Update - Just got off the phone with Jeep. They are sending this case to their "special investigations unit" who will try to determine the cause of the fire.
Glad I called.

Re: 2012 GC: Alternator Melted!

I'm also happy to hear that Jeep is at least acknowledging the issue.

But I'm gonna be pissed at the OP if all our Jeeps are recalled for a possible fire hazard.
