2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo whine coming from engine bay!(Video)

Hello, Im new to the forums and have been browsing around for alittle. I hate that this is my first post because it includes an issue that just started with the truck.

I have this faint whining sound coming into the cabin from the engine bay. I cant seem to pinpoint where its at in the engine but when we purchased the truck one week ago it had never sounded like this...

Even on cold starts it doesnt happen to my knowledge but only after restart. I will be taking it to the dealer today to have them look at it hopefully its not anything major.

Comments are welcome, Thanks.

reformatted link and already took it to the dealer and they are replacing the alternator which seems to be the issue. But after only 32,000 miles the alternator is done for??? Maybe some quality control issues going on

Hi there! I've recently developed a similar, but slightly less noticeable whine. Mine sounds the same, but is more on acceleration , most noticeable at 2,400rpm. My dealer is taking a look now, after initially being dismissive and saying it was the electro power steering (which my hemi does not have), or "cam timing sensors". I'm not accepting that. Dealership owner drove this prior to my purchase as used, and I know him - so he is going to drive tomorrow.

Did you get anywhere with this?

Re: 2012 Grand Cherokee Laredo whine coming from engine bay!(Video)

Hi just got my first Jeep and I was very excited with the look and feel of the vehicle when I first purchased it about two weeks ago.

However, I noticed the same noise within a few days, at first I thought that was just "how a Jeep engine sounded" but when a buddy jumped in for a first ride, he immediately noticed it too. So I did a little research and stumbled across this webpage.

So, did any of you ever determine what the noise is and whether it is detrimental to the sound running of the engine? Please provide an update if you have one, I would GREATLY appreciate it! As it is I am very thankful to have found the video so that I can point it out to the mechanic.

Ironically on another forum someone mentioned it was an alternator problem and my Jeep has been giving me an Electrical System warning of some type. I have the Jeep at the dealership now trying to figure out what's wrong with that, I wonder if they are related? Thanks in advance for any more input!

I too just recently bought my new to me 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo and absolutely love it! I have heard the whine since I first got it and just assumed that was normal, apparently I was wrong. If anyone figures out how to fix it without having to throw money at a dealership please share!

OK so in the couple of hours since I posted I heard back from the dealership and they confirmed what I read on the other forums. That it is in fact related to the alternator, so they are replacing my alternator as again I bought the car less than two weeks ago. My 2012 Cherokee has 49k miles on it at the time....

That being said, I will wait until I pick it up and drive it to see if the whine is actually gone with a completely new alternator. However, it will be a few days as I bought the Jeep at a Toyota dealership, therefore the part was not in-stock. I will post an update ASAP when I am once again behind the wheel of the new purchase.

OK good news for anyone experiencing a similar problem. Apparently the alternator in the 2012 models was a production problem and the alternators are in recall. You can go to any Jeep/Chrysler dealership and have the alternator replaced for free! So if you have a whine/whir noise coming from your '12 Cherokee, probably means the alternator is about to go and you should head into a dealership pronto. Otherwise you will get stranded like I did, cause when it goes, it goes in a hurry and you will not be able to crank the engine after that.

OK, hope this helps! Happy travels everyone....

Picked up Jeep today after the alternator was replaced, and much to my happiness the whine/whir noise was gone. And as stated earlier, at no charge on the alternator as it was recalled. OK I've reported all I can possibly report, hope this helps someone with a similar problem!

Hello there,

I started having the same noise, at the beginning I thought it was my aftermarket radio, so I spent quite the money to inspect it until I found out it was the alternator. I have 37k miles on it, looks like its out of warranty, where do you find it's a recall? I make an appt for next week, but I would like to print the recall so I dont have to pay for repair/replace.

Did you schedule the appointment at a Jeep/Chrysler dealership? That's where you have to go to get the free work done. When you call for the appointment, ask them about the recall, they should be well aware of it. I did not have to print anything, they just had a record of it. Let me know if this helps.... good luck!

thanks for your fast response, I did make the appt with the jeep dealership, the service rep. was not aware of any recalls. But I found an article from the safety transportation website to use just in case they want to charge me.

Weird. It's all over Google:

Chrysler Recalls 747,000 Jeep And Dodge Vehicles For Electrical, Alternator Issues – Consumerist

Now idea how he had not heard of it with such a massive recall. Again good luck, I would be shocked if service management at that dealership was unaware!
