He told me that most of the 2012 Jeep GC with the 3.6L V6 will throw a check engine light around 25,000 miles due to a known defect in the left head. The problem is a burnt valve in cylinder 4 and will most likely be replaced under warranty. Just letting you 2012 owners out there know of possible problems in the future when you rack up the milage. I am at 20,000 miles so I'm just waiting for it to happen to me. The Check engine light code is P0304 and its cylinder 4 misfire most likely caused by that valve that burns up. Good thing for warranties!
Can you ask the Jeep Tech if he knows how extensive the problem is (years and models that are affected) I have a 2011 GC without any problems so far but I am concerned about the reliability of the engine.
Thanks

And people are whining that Consumer Reports was wrong not to recommend the GC anymore.

Re: 2012 Jeep GC 3.6L notorious problem

Since I only have 12,000 miles on my '12 V-6, I have a ways to go. Do monitor the misfires monthly and am still in the 0-2 range. Not concerned, I have a lifetime Chrysler warranty.

Issue seems to be something about the valve guide(s) & depends on driving conditions.

Expect they will get though the '14 electrical power problems.

Even back in the '60s, Chrysler was known for "pushing the envelope" in engineering. Sometimes it backfires. Unfortunately bean counters and engineering for a harsh environment do not always go together. Do wish they would leave the computers to people who know how to build them.

Is funny in a way: the computer industry has been pretty clueless about marketing and the automotive companies are not so good about computers. Seems like there could be a lot of synergy there.

GM did better but then was buying computers from Hitachi.

Re: 2012 Jeep GC 3.6L notorious problem

Just got a confirmation that my car needs a new head (left side). Very low pressure and ruined tappets for the P0302 code it threw.
As for the reliability of the engine I'm not qualified to talk about that, but the car was functioning fine on 5 cylinders. No hesitations, every now and then a slight loss of power, like when you give it more gas but it doesn't seem to do anything. So I can understand that Chrysler is extremely proud of this little engine.
I just hope that the new AC head is the definitive fix.

Touchwood mine is so far ok. 2012 Build and I've had it for about 11 Months now and I've done 26,000 KM. I'm awaiting for an OBD2 reader so I can keep an eye out. I also bought the $3k extended warranty Maxicare "CJD", 175,000km or 5 years.

Turned off the car and pulled over.
Waited a few minutes and started it up. The CEL was on but not blinking.
Took it to the nearest Auto Zone and had them read the code. P0304.

Taking it to the dealer today.
A different dealer told me when I was calling around that 70% of the time it had been cylinder head problem. Especially for a 2011 V6 with similarmiles.
Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I'm having this same exact problem with my 2012. I took it to the dealer, they turned off the CEL and said if it came back on I would have to have a cylinder head replaced. Fast forward a month, the CEL came back on and flashed/chimed. I turned off the car, waited and when I started it up again the CEL was on but not flashing. I'm bringing it to a dealer tomorrow- I'm sure it'll all be fixed under warrantee since I only have just over 20k on it.

My question is, what has everyones experience been with having your rental covered? The dealer said they would only cover my rental if I purchased some sort of warrantee that covers service rentals, which he said I did not (I have no clue if I did, I still have to check my files). I saw the Autoweek article about the Pentastar cylindar head issue, and it said that Chrysler was covering costs of rentals. The article dates back to August 2012, I wasnt sure if they were still honoring this. Has anyone had any recent experience with this issue/having rental costs covered?

I've not come across the cel problem on my my12, but my dealer said for any major work plan it out on the week their loan car was available so I can take that. Which ive taken for a few days when I had the A/c comp replaced over the 3 days they needed to rip out the dash.

Yeah, and at the same time they do recommend the Durango which uses the exact same engine

Re: 2012 Jeep GC 3.6L notorious problem

I turned my 2012 Jeep GC in today for the check engine light coming on and off for about a month. Come to find out I need new engine heads. My jeep has 27,000
Does anyone if this problem will continue when we hit 50,000. I understand that most of us around the same mileage, just wondering if this can happen again, if so time to trade in the jeep. I don't want to have to pay for this problem
