2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - AIR/HEAT dual climate issue! Help please!!

I'm new to forum. New to being a jeep owner. I bought a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo.... 40K on it and love it. Wonder why I never got a Jeep before.

Anyhow, long story short I need some help. I recently was driving turned on the AC with the weather near 90 degrees now.

For some reason I noticed it wasn't getting as cold though there was plenty of cold air blowing driver side.... I turned the knob all the way cold for the passenger side as well - only to find it was blowing out HOT AIR!

Now I've been searching google, and reading a lot of the posts...... trying to find the solution and only finding plenty of 99-04' Jeep Grand cherokee solutions posted for the blender door or what not... but nothin for the 2012 Jeep grand cherokee with how to fix it.

I am definitely needing some help from you guys. Step by step video instructions would be amazing (checked youtube to only find nothing for the 2012 models). I am assuming I have to fix the blender door I keep getting wind of regarding this issue.... but

does:
1) anyone have a website to get the part cheap for my model?
2) step by step video for someone who definitely will need to replace on my own - cause I can't pay the dealership a grand to fix it.
3) any advice.... help!

I'd greatly appreciate it

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - AIR/HEAT dual climate issue! Help please!!

My 2012 Grand Cherokee did the same thing. Passenger side blend door gear broke; it's cheap plastic gear. $2 part. Can be done yourself, there's a how to somewhere on this forum. Dealer might try to charge several $100s of dollars to fix if they claim the entire dash has to be removed; if they say that, they would be wrong.

Thank you. I never realized how common it was till I found the forums just blowing up about it.... You would think they'd engineer a better mechanism by now...

Dang!! I was reading they were ranging from 500-1000 dollars just to fix it when it is much less. I've been trying to find how-to videos but have plenty off YouTube and forums for 99-04 models but nothing for 2011 and ups

Thank you! Im going to have to try to do some research cause it sounds like a somewhat simple fix

If it is the blend door, BuckeyeSRT's post should help. Good luck.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - AIR/HEAT dual climate issue! Help please!!

It's a fairly simple fix and a dirt common problem especially with the '11 and '12 models. Remove the glove box and the passenger side blend door actuator motor and gear is just inside to the left. Shouldn't cost more than $150-$200 to replace with parts and labor included by a good cheap independent tech.

There's several good posts in these forums explaining exactly how to do it.

Both the driver and passenger sides can be fixed absolutely perfect without pulling the dash.

Don't let any dealer try to convince you that it's an air box or blend door problem. Dealers prefer to replace the air box when the blend door actuator motors and gears "go". That's a $1300 repair and they tear the dash down to the firewall to replace. Chances are great your air box and blend doors are fine!

Your local Craigslist ads for auto repair are a great resource for cheap work. My "go to" CL mechanic charges $25 an hour and works in his driveway. The guy is an absolute genius. Better than any dealer tech I've ever found... and he really cares.

Thank you! So I take it it's not the blendor door than its the actuator and motor. And previously was referred to the other page of the guy with SRT version doing it.....

Thank you. I just was a bit worried cause I can definitely see the first steps of taking the glove box part being easy but in some videos I was researching people were using a little hack saw to get to the blendor door area behind the glove box, I was like damn.... I don't want to mess anything up. So looking for the right parts, hopefully step by step for my model 2012 - you all have been so helpful! Thank you!

I can say with almost 100% confidence your air box and blend doors are perfectly fine.

Chances are the actuator gear has broken into pieces. The actuator motor may have stripped internal gears when the actuator gear "went". You really need both on hand to do this repair successfully the first time and not have to "dig" into it again.

The gear is Mopar part # 68814880AA. Get one from your dealer for about $2.50

Buy an OEM Mopar actuator motor part # 68079488AB from Ebay for about $35 shipped. DON'T buy the Dorman aftermarket actuator that normally sells for about $10 less! It will not calibrate correctly on its own. The OEM Mopar actuator will!

No hack saw is needed. You are not accessing the blend doors inside the air box. You are replacing the actuator motor and gear mounted to the outside of the air box with two T20 screws.

You are lucky since the passenger side is easier to do than driver side... but both sides can be fixed cheaply. Same part numbers given above apply to driver side also.

If you do not want to tackle it yourself... find a cheap mechanic on Craigslist for $25 to $30 an hour labor.

You can easily have this fixed for around $100 total parts and labor if you do your homework.

Hey man.... Thank you so much for reaching out like this! That helps out a bunch for what I need and how to go at it! I really appreciate it. I'll definitely go with the link and references provided and get those parts and replace it myself - (going to study it up more as you suggest and do it myself) - you guys all helped me save hundreds of dollar and definitely glad I don't need to hack saw or do anything but just replace parts!

I'll plan to do this next week on a day off but continue to do research - in the mean time. And I'll post a follow up on how it went!

Re: 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo - AIR/HEAT dual climate issue! Help please!!

No problem! If I can get it done... then anyone can. I just hate to see folks pay their dealer $1200 for a new air box when $100 will normally take care of it. Hopefully my advice in these forums will take some profit away from the dealers and put it to much better use.
