2012 Laredo CRD

The load capacity on my GJC 2012 Laredo CRD is about 68kgs. (150lbs) This is not a huge capacity if you want o load it up with racks and a small boat. This would require a capacity of somewhere around 120 kgs or 264lbs. Has anyone confronted this issue or is there a way to shore things up in the roof to handle greatere weights?

I believe it is related to the fact that the chrome rails that we get on the export version are held through the roof with "rivnuts".
These are a bit similar to a pop rivet - hence there is a maximum engineered load that they can withstand.
Likely it is not possible without major restructure to increase the factory load limits on the roof.

Hey thanks..I guess I am going to have remove the TIN racks that are there and get someone to have close look at it. There must be a way to improve this.

Re: 2012 Laredo CRD

It is also related to the fact that there are side curtain airbags. You cant do any changes to the roof or roofrails that will change the rigidity of the roof area as it can prevent the curtain airbags working correctly in a side impact.

Having said that, there is this ... http://www.rocky-road.com/wk2-rails.html

Re: 2012 Laredo CRD

They do ship to Oz ... email them and ask for details.

Also, Rhino now supply a pioneer platform for the WK2. Have a look here ... http://www.rhinorack.com.au/Vehicle_...6238_4690.aspx

None of these get over the official weight limit of 68kg, but they are much sturdier than the mopar cross bars.

Re: 2012 Laredo CRD

I think that load issue is on all Grands. I put two 60lb kayaks and 2 mnt bikes on the roof for a 800 mile trip plus towing a 7k lb trailer. I didn't have any issue with the roof or towing that weight. I think I had 200-225 lb on the roof easily.
