2012 Random Shut off.

2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo X. 50k miles.

So my wife is pulling out of our driveway yesterday morning and her Jeep just shuts off. The weird thing is that everything else stayed on. We tried to start it up again and all it was doing was cranking. The red light by the RPM was blinking and the message center was saying Ignition and Accessories are on or something like that. The radio, light, and everything else was on and would not turn off. It is as if the car tricked itself to thinking it was on but wasn't. I ended up have to disconnect the battery and then reconnecting it and problem solved. It started up and was good to go.

So we take it to the dealership and they can't find anything wrong. It obviously did not record the issue into the computer. Anyone else had this problem.

Re: 2012 Random Shut off.

My 2012 is at the dealer today for a service appointment and what seems to be a similar problem. On three or four occasions, after decelerating from highway speed, I've had the engine die in mid-turn.

It's actually pretty alarming when it happens--I lose all power assist in the steering, which makes it almost feel as though the steering column has locked up. Not good. I'm a moose and can still maneuver the GC, but a smaller person might have problems doing so.

In my case, moving the transmission selector to "N," and touching the start button while pressing down on the brake pedal works to immediately restart it, and it otherwise runs perfectly. I just hope that they can diagnose it and fix whatever the heck is going on. I fear a "can not duplicate condition" report on the work order.

Re: 2012 Random Shut off.

I'm pasting this from my reply to another thread.

I knew about this before I bought mine and purchased MaxCare. No issues yet and am just waiting for it to happen.

Re: 2012 Random Shut off.

Thanks. I had read about the TIPM issue a while back and simply didn't make the (possible) connection. Unlike some of the experiences that have been reported, this is the only malfunction I've experienced. So, it may be something else.

I'll see what, if anything, the dealership figures out. I purchased the lifetime MaxCare warranty, so I won't be out much money if they are able to diagnose it. My hope is that they'll figure it out.

Re: 2012 Random Shut off.

Well, I just talked to the service manager. He said that if it were the TIPM, there would have been some error codes and none were stored. It's in for its 64K mile service, and he did say that the plugs were pretty much done, and that the throttle body was pretty gunked up with carbon. So, we'll see how it acts post-service. Modern engines are finicky, but it's been running perfect (apart from that minor bit about it occasionally shutting down unexpectedly).
