Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

Yep, this will be interesting. The bottom line is that PER my 2013 GC MANUAL in my glove copartment, Recreational Towing works the same as older GC's, including my 2004 trade-in, E X C E P T the process is electrical vs manual AND you don't have to worry about a locking steering column. We'll see.

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

Here are links to the latest 2012, 2013, and 2014 Owner's Manuals. Note the 2012 and 2014 models have the ignition turned to off while the 2013 does not and has you remove the battery cable. I can only assume the 2013 online manual is wrong.

Adding to this, the 2011 manual also as 2013 has you removing the battery cable. So odd numbered Wk2's remove the Battery cable and even numbered Wk2's don't.

Write down the mileage and hook it up. Prepare for towing per manual. Go for a short drive. Compare before and after mileage. Did it or did it not record mileage ? Obviously not possible on a 14 as no one has gotten theirs yet but easily done on a 13

Think Outside !- No Box Required.

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

Thanks for your info. I have absolutely no info on the 2014 and assume that the service manager for Crystal has info that I have not been able to acess. I am familiar with the dealer as I bought a 2004 GC from Ferman in Tampa and that is where the automobile was located. You can download the 2012 and 2013 jeep manual in PDF format from the internet and the difference in recreational towing procedures are dramatic. I will copy at the bottom of this post the revelant part of the 2013 manual that details what I am talking about. The only way you can acess the key with the start button is to pop the button off and insert the key (plastic square)
Procedure from 2013 for recreational towing.

For vehicles with Keyless Enter-N-Go™, remove the
Keyless Enter-N-Go™ button and use the key fob to
complete this procedure. Refer to “Installing And
Removing The ENGINE START/STOP Button/
Keyless Enter-N-Go™” in “Starting and Operating”
for how to remove the Keyless Enter-N-Go™ button.

11. Release the brake pedal for five seconds and ensure
that there is no vehicle movement.
12. Turn the engine OFF, then turn the ignition switch
back to the ON/RUN position without starting the
engine.
13. Firmly apply the parking brake.
14. Shift the transmission into PARK.
15. Attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle using a suitable
tow bar.
16. Release the parking brake.
17. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and secure it
away from the negative battery post.
NOTE:
• Steps 1 through 6 are requirements that must be met
before pressing the NEUTRAL (N) button, and must
continue to be met until the shift has been completed.
If any of these requirements are not met before pressing
the NEUTRAL (N) button or are no longer met
during the shift, then the NEUTRAL (N) indicator light
will flash continuously until all requirements are met
or until the NEUTRAL (N) button is released.
• The ignition switch must be in the ON/RUN position
for a shift to take place and for the position indicator
lights to be operable. If the ignition switch is not in the
ON/RUN position, the shift will not take place and no
position indicator lights will be on or flashing.

For complete download owners manual 2013 Jeep. Be aware that the working manual is much shorter and does not include the step to disconnect the battery and leave the ignition on. If you can find out why there is such a problem you will be doing better than me.

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

I'll 2nd that!

I have read the Operating Manuals from 2010 thru 2014. The only manual that says disconnect the battery is 2013, 3rd edition, page 593, 17. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and secure it away from the negative battery post.” Also, from 2010 thru 2014 only 2013 requires the ignition switch to be left in the on position.

When the service manager was further questioned he said that he is assuming that the removing the battery cable requirement was dropped in 2014 due to changing the ignition system to push button starting. But that is an assumption on his part. He also said he did not know why Jeep changed the 2013 to removing the negative battery cable; nor did he know the risk if the negative battery terminal was not removed. I am assuming that a warranty claim would not be honored if the owner’s manual was not followed. Apparently the towing requirements for the 2013 GC are different then the 2014 GC. Steve

EDIT: after posting I went looking for the 2013 "Users Guide". I found a 2nd edition that says on page 96, "Turn the engine off and firmly apply the parking brake.
• Shift the transmission into PARK and remove the Key Fob.
• Attach the vehicle to the tow vehicle using a suitable tow bar and release the parking brake.

I am assuming, because I do not own this car, that with the transfer case in neutral and the key is in the off position to turn the engine off , in that position it is possible to shift the transmission into Park. So should the key be left "ON" or "OFF"?

Further, there is no mention of disconnecting the battery. Possibly the 3rd edition of the owners manual trumps the 2nd edition of the users manual? This difference between manuals
will add to the confusion. Steve

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

There is a start button on the 2012 I believe. The 2014 towing procedure is completely different than anything before. It even includes starting the car every 24 hours to reposition the air level while under tow. Also you put the tranny in neutral with the engine running while shifting to neutral on the transfer case. It also states that car auto shifts to park when engine shut down with start/stop button with tranny in neutral and transfer case in neutral. Thanks for the link to the 2014 manual it is really appreciated.

The 2011 manual, 2nd edition says: 16. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and secure it away from the negative battery post. But the 5th edition leaves out step 16 so according to the 5th edition the negative battery is not required to be removed. HOLY COW! Steve

I hadn't noticed the later edition of the 2011 OM until re-looking after your post. The 2013 OM might be wrong...???!!!

And thank you for carefully reading the manual, because you noticed things I hadn't.

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

I disconnected the battery on my new 2013 JGC for 2 minutes and did NOT lose my settings (seat position, Homelink, radio resets, evic). Hopefully, that is true for longer periods.

Also, found Roadmaster 765 automatic battery disconnect that apparently will eliminate accessing the battery every time you hook up or disconnect from the RV. It also provides 12 vdc to keep the toad battery charged.

Roadmaster Inc. - Tow Bars, Braking Systems & RV Accessories

$150 through amazon.com. I'm waiting for a response from Roadmaster to make sure it works for the 2013 JGC. Maybe I won't have to return the Jeep to the dealer after all.

I found this site for battery disconnect switches that seem to have a good design. The switch only draws current when the selection is made.
From: Batteries Products

Below is an example. About $125. Finding a mounting place might be a problem for any of the switches. I have not yet used these switches.

PressTech TM Touch Pad
Battery Disconnect

Simply "Touch ON, Touch OFF" to disconnect your battery with our PressTech Touch Pad Battery Disconnect kit. Hide the waterproof touch pad for maximum security - put it under the lip of your dash, behind upholstery, inside a fender well, etc. Great as an anti-theft deterrent or to prevent battery drain. Includes our auxiliary "hot" feed to the clock or computer or other items requiring power for memory. The solenoid is rated 110 amps continuous duty and 750 amps surge. Hardware, wire, connectors and detailed instructions included. There is no electricity used when this unit is ON or OFF, only while switching.

Re: 2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

Interesting. I wonder if their "auxiliary" power lead can be connected to the radio, evic, computer, etc to preserve settings? Looks like a cheaper solution that may be easier to install under the passenger seat.
