2013 GC QuadtracII - Recreational Towing

With my new 2013 quadra-tracII GC, I'm very confused about the steering column lock (or lack thereof) relative to recreational towing. My manual that came with the car essentially says, after everything is set up, remove key fob, hook up to motorhome, release emer brake and go. An on-line manual I downloaded before I took delivery, says turn ignition back to on/run before towing. This latter step is same as with my 04 GC....one click back from start, which disables steering lock. Also, the on-line Jeep manual says disconnect battery. The manual in my glove compartment makes no mention of disconnecting the battery?? My main concern is the steering column lock. Since the manual says remove the key and go..... DOES THAT MEAN THAT THE NEW JEEP STEERING COLUMNS ARE NOT LOCKED WHEN THE IGNITION IS OFF, KEY REMOVED, ETC??? Any ideas?? Thanks for any and all comments. Gary

Can you try it? Follow the procedure, perhaps with a window dow, and see if you can turn the steering wheel a turn.If you can its not locked.

I've heard here recently that disconnecting the battery is not needed nor recommended.

I tow my '11 GC with QT II behind my motorhome. After putting the transfer case in neutral, turn the engine off, put the gearshift in park, remove the key and go. Steering does not lock, no need to disconnect the battery.

I just bought a 2013 GC Overland and found this site as I was looking for the same information as you regarding battery disconnect.
What towbar/base plate and brake system are you using?
I think I am going Blue Ox with a Roadmaster 9160 brake, but I haven't bought anything yet.
Based on what I see here I'll hold off on the $200 battery disconnect until I try it out or find out otherwise.

I now heard from several sources that there's no need to disconnect the battery, so we'll see. Also, it appears that the steering column stays unlocked with simple key removal, which sounds great. I've been using Blue Ox for towing and will need to have new base plate installed on the new GC.

I have the Blue Ox baseplate with the removable "ears" and the Blue Ox Aventa tow bar.

Been using on old Brake Buddy for years with 3 different cars but I'm starting to have problems with it so I am looking for something else too. Probably go with the Patriot or the RVIbrake. Just personnel preference that I don't want anything that requires tapping any wires, vacuum lines, or brake lines.

Sounds like same as my set up in the 04 GC that I just traded for the 13 GC. I also have the Brake Buddy and it's worked well for me. Good luck.

I wonder if you have found out if you can tow without disconnected negative battery. I called Hitching Post in Ocala Fl (Blue Ox installer) about this and they said that if you did not disconnect battery that the 2013 Jeep grand cherokee with the proper tranny would in fact record mileage and turn main computer on while underway which would run the battery down. Confirmed with a jeep dealer in Jacksonville so I cancelled my order for a new 2013 summit based on this info. This is not the case with the 2012 as I downloaded the pdf manual and it did not require you to disconnect negative battery post. There is a difference between the working manual and the owners manual in the procedure to recreationally tow the 2013 grand cherokee jeep. If anyone has any further info would love to know the score. I tow a 2010 4 down and remove key with batt connected for the last 20K miles with no problems.

I have not yet towed mine, although I hope to make a test run in the next week or so - weather permitting. I'll post my findings afterward. Just curious though - why would you cancel your purchase because the battery must be disconnected for towing? It seems to be a fairly simple process to disconnect and reconnect.

Thanks for posting. (This info for the hemi but may pertain to other engines) The reason I cancelled is because the battery is located under the passenger seat and it is very, very difficult to get to. It has a cover under the seat and you would have to get on your hands and knees to disconnect and reconnect. As a matter of fact it is so hard to get to that Jeep installed covered terminals to the battery in the engine compartment to jump start the car if it becomes neccessay. I could not figure out why they said to disconnect the negative rather than the positive terminal or for that matter either or but my sense is that your wrench may hit a ground source (spark) if you dissconnet the positive. There is an after market device (200 bucks) that can disconnect the battery via a switch if that is what you want. I was also told you may pull a 60 amp cb in the fuse box as well but could not verify that thru jeep. (I did locate the fuse in a 2013 demo Overland hemi and not easy to pull J13 believe but not certain) Be aware that the M & G brake Systym is not an option for supplemental braking on the 2013 as the master cylinder for the brake has been relocated to under the drivers seat beneath the floor on the outside. (hemi) I do not know about other engines. All this info is without written confirmation from jeep. Jeep did confirm for me in Writing that there is no steering lock on vehicles sold in the US. Iam most interested in how this works for you as I really wanted that Summit but I will not crawl around (70 Years old) to disconnect and reconnect the battery each time I tow. Also would like to know if 2014 is different than 2013 (recreational towing procedures). If you like I am at 904 540 6801 and I will be happy to pass along any info I have as I have been towing Grand Cherokees since 1999. I have a 2010 43 foot Itasca and use a Blue Ox Aventa with the 10K rating. I have been motorhoming since 1972. Chasedog

Isn't it lovely that Jeep has made all of this so simple for us??? My 2004 GC was so simple. Good luck with everything. I'll post my reflections after my initial hook-up next month. Hoping for the best.
