2014/2015 V6 transmission issue

V6 owners, help me out here. I recently picked up a 2015 V6 Overland and noticed that I get a harsh shift (actually, a bit of a bang/clunk) only under the following conditions:

At slow speeds (typically in a parking lot) when the transmission is in 1st gear and upshifts to 2nd gear under zero throttle, I get the harsh shift. If you're wondering how/why the transmission upshifts from 1st to 2nd gear without any throttle, it can happen two different ways. First, coasting down a slight hill will cause the transmission to upshift. Secondly, if I'm on level ground, and I give the engine a bit of gas and then let off right before the transmission shifts, it will result in the harsh shift.

Anyway, here's the question-- does your 2014/2015 V6 transmission do this? I happen to work with a guy who has a 2014 V6 and he told me that both his and his daughter's Grand Cherokees (she also has a 2014) do the same thing. He was told by his local Jeep dealer that it is normal operation and they all do it.

There's a member here on the forum who says that he had the same problem and it was fixed with a TCM relearn procedure, so I have a hard time believing that this is normal for the V6 transmission. Can you guys check to see if your Grand Cherokee does this harsh shift and let me know? It might be difficult to make it happen, but a little slow speed driving/coasting in an open parking lot should eventually make it happen.

14" 06/14 bod here it happened to me once. I gave it a little throttle blip when I was rolling in 1st, and bam. is it "normal"? is it an issue? who knows...

Mine does the same. It also does it when I'm slowing from 2 to 1.

Several TSB's out there on wk2jeeps dot com for this on '14's, not so sure the 15's are immune.

I Have a 2014 JGC Limited V6 (June Build) here 3100 miles. Mine does the same thing in 1st gear into 2nd while creeping...its not a hard shift, more of a clunky shift. Does it maybe 30% of the time. Other than that the shifts are smooth. Also this is more evident on Eco mode.

Re: 2014/2015 V6 transmission issue

I've had a couple of issues with mine...

Shortly after I bought it, the trans was failing to upshift back into 8th when leveling off after climbing any kind of rise in the road. I don't remember what the dealer did to fix this but it's never happened since.

The latest started a few months ago... harsh 2-3 upshifts and 2-1 downshifts. The dealer did the trans relearn and that seemed to cure the 2-3 upshift issue. Still have the 2-1 downshift issue.

I've never had a harsh 1-2 upshift. Based on your description of "giving the engine a bit of gas and then let off right before the transmission shifts,"... I'd have to say that harsh upshift is not exclusive to the Jeep trans. You can get almost any trans to shift harshly by doing that.

You need to stop doing that.

Yeah, mine has done this a few times, but otherwise shifts flawlessly. I'm coming from an Audi which did the same thing on occasion. I complained about it and the Audi dealership did the relearn procedure and it stopped for a while, but resurfaced as it learned my driving style all over again.

I have a June 2013 build and mine will do that in the parking lot as well when I'm coasting out after work. I think there is a sweet spot that you have to avoid if you do not want it to do it. I typically drive really slow or a lot more aggressive so it doesn't happen to me all that often. Mine just sounds like it's revving up to go somewhere to shift into second gear.

I've never had a vehicle that would shift harshly by gassing it and then letting off right before it shifts. But the Jeep will do it pretty much every time. And if I try the same thing when the trans shifts from 2nd to 3rd, or 3rd to 4th, or 5th to 6th, it will not result in a harsh shift or a bang into the next gear. Still though, what I was describing earlier is only one way to make the harsh shift happen. If I'm coating down a slight hill and the engine shifts from 1st to 2nd gear (because the vehicle is gaining speed from coasting down the hill), it will always bang into 2nd gear very harshly. Every time.

When I enter my development, I have to go down a small hill and stop and the Stop sign. Then I turn right as the road continues down hill. Just about 100 feet after I turn, the road curves to the left, so it don't ever both hitting the gas at all since I'm already going down hill and turning. Well, every single time I do this, it results in a banging shift into 2nd gear. Today, I decided to accelerate instead of coast, and it shifted just fine into 2nd gear. The only problem was that I had to hit the brakes hard because I was going too fast for the curve in the road. LOL

Anyway, the point is that this is definitely not normal for any car and I'd like to get it fixed.

Well, I have... that's why I avoid doing that.

Are you in Eco mode when this happens?

Happens in Eco mode and with Eco mode turned off. That was the first thing I tried.

Until you can get it looked at, try it in manually with the paddle shifters. See if that helps at all.
