Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

Wish I could be of more help but is takes access to the factory computer system to see a complete ground system even with the Service Manual (available up to '13s but not for '14s yet).

That said, many of the important ground connections should be somewhere around the TIPM and the most important is the connection from the alternator to the battery which is usually through the engine to the chassis. It takes a dedicated wire or strap because the mounts isolate the drivertrain from the body.

Then we figured it's possible we could just get a refund with the Lemon money instead of a swap, which would allow us to get into this if we liked it. Since the buyback will probably take 30-60 days, I thought there was a chance the timing would work... But I shouldn't tempt fate anyway. It's an ENTIRELY new model, and my wife and I love the GC anyway... and if Marchionne himself is saying, "it's complicated," well, I'm not sold right now on Chrysler's ability to do "complicated."
Have you driven the VW Tourag TDI? My buddy has a 2013 and loves it. I've driven it and it's HOT!! He's a perfectionist and is almost constantly out in his drive way tinkering with it or reading the factory manuals - he's sold on it - they have a version that is ALMOST as plush as the Summit - I came within a whisker of buying one but decided to wait for the 2014 Summit - hope that was a wise choice.

As for the dealerships, MANY MANY thanks for all the info guys!! Good to know that staying away from Smithtown & Port Jeff were both good ideas! And wow - how does a place like East Hills Chrysler Jeep Dodge stay in business with all those shady tactics??

The Amex rep claimed if East Hills agreed that they owed me the $500, the complaint would cancel out and it would be quickly refunded. So Ann actually sent me a mass email last week for a sale East Hills was having and I wrote back, "you really should be ashamed of yourselves -- sending me spam after you refused to refund my money?" She wrote back that they were GOING to refund my money, but I put in a dispute first (yes, this was after a week). She said now Amex is taking it out of their escrow account or something so if they agreed they owed me the $500, I would actually be getting $1000 (refunded twice). Can you believe that BS? So they're "continuing" to fight it until Amex takes the money from them. SO glad they couldn't get the Jeep I wanted!

Jeez, what is up with Jeep dealers? So many bad ones in 10-15 miles?

Now trying to decide between Browns and Westbury Jeep for my next one...
I'll tell you exactly how East Hills stays in business since I work in that area and know the residents very well. It is a very very upscale area where no one negotiates prices and paying more for the car actually looks better to them than paying less.

I'm pretty sure we would love the Touraeg, but it's just out of my price range for the family car. Very cool auto with supposed off road cred.

My first jeep was a used 1998 GC Laredo 5.7L Z package, that I got from Westbury Jeep in 2000. That thing was an absolute nightmare... individual gears in the tranny replaced 3 or 4 times, radiator blew, power steering pump blew when I was making a turn, check engine light would be on so often that I am shocked the service techs didn't just remove the lightbulb that lit it. There was a host of other issues that crippled it for the 3 year lease, a good portion of which I was away with the Army. Missed qualifying for the lemon law at the time by a small window, thing spent over 75 days at the shop during the 3 year period. To this day, I think very poorly of that dealership, and avoided them like the plague this time around. I had a VW Jetta for 6 years that only needed oil changes, then I had a "high end" german auto (certified used) fall apart on me after 30K miles. I bought a new Jeep under the impression they had cleaned up their act, and I hope to God that is the case for me.
Yipes... My only hope is that things have changed in time. My neighbor is telling me avoid Browns and Smithtown, I'm not doing East Hills, don't want Town & Country again, Port Jeff has a bad reputation. All these Jeep dealers in the area and they're all bad? I guess I really should go back to Acura.... Ugh. Maybe I should open up a Jeep dealership here and treat customers like gold? Trouble is, if Chrysler corporate is as helpless as they have been shown to be, looks like there is no support to the dealers.

The onetime President of Saab Cars USA once said something along the lines of, "I can't make every customer happy, but I *can* make all my dealers happy. That was one reason the company was so successful in the late 70s and early 80s when he was in charge.

Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

I have owned 9 motorcycles, and I can say the purchase process for them was pleasant, as most if not all were from the same dealer. A large majority of the cycle dealers are seedy as fack, and car dealers are likely just as bad. Whenever I leave one, I feel the need to take a shower. That being said, until the middleman is cut out and you can buy factory direct, we have what we have. Having acquaintances in the motorcycle and automobile service industry, my confidence in the dealer and their service department are shaky to begin with.

Factory direct would be cool, although the service departments would have to be run by someone... Doesn't seem like there is a good answer other than the company itself really closely monitoring the dealers. I think with smaller brands that would be easier. With the number of dealers out there for Jeep and the amount of cars they sell, I bet its pretty difficult... Hence, the problems some of us are facing when something does go wrong...

That is a fantastic idea. I think I will see what I can do about that assuming everything works out and Chrysler buys it back. Thanks!

Man I spent an hour at like 2 AM last night reading this thread. It was like a good book, I just couldn't stop.

I honestly feel for you, just having this happen to my brand new vehicle would make me crazy, but to have my wife driving it with my kid would be to much. Hats off to you that you haven't strangled anyone yet!

This is certainly scary, and I think raises some serious concerns about the electrical design of this truck. I would like to see the electrical schematics released and have someone go through and identify all the major connections that should be checked. I don't think this is going to stop me from buying a GC, but I am certainly going to check all the grounds I can find before driving it off the lot.

I'm riveted to my seat, waiting to see what happens for you, I hope your next one is flawless!

Thanks! Yeah, it has been quite a month... I will post updates as I have them, but for now, even this hasn't scared me off Jeep, at least not yet. Again, I just wish I had that added confidence of a manufacturer standing behind its product. That would make it a no brainer to get another. But right now, I go back and forth just about every day on what I should do.

amc2002, may I ask you a few questions which you may have already answered in this thread... (sorry, but it's 25 pages)

I'm just curious and will be talking to Quality about this tomorrow...

Last 8 of VIN and MDH number which is listed on the build sticker, attached to the driver's side front door.
