Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

"I could be wrong, but I think that most of the folks in this thread have vehicles that are under warranty. Why do we need to check codes, that's what the dealer is going to do. "

Well if the warrenty system really worked then we would not have 385 posts in this thread.

Seems to me if the dealer had understood electrical systems, the bad ground would have been found initially and none of the rest might have been necessary.

Will admit to being a bit AR and insist on having service manuals and scan tools so I know what is happening but have also had Things Go Wrong in places inaccessible to tow trucks.

If you toss in lost time spent at a dealer and the fact I have a day job then there are a lot of things it is just easier to do in my garage sometimes at 2 in the morning (particularly when summer gets here).

Keep in mind that I once took a car to a dealer because the oil pressure was low/fluctuating. $60 later I was told the gauge was bad. Assumed he had followed the FSM which said "check with mechanical gauge". Returning home I found two mangled cam bearings lying in the bottom of the pan.

Some people may just want to drive, and that's ok. Not everyone wants to be a mechanic or be involved in repairing their vehicle. The downside to that decision is you are at the mercy of your mechanic.

I prefer to know what's going on, especially on a $40k+ possession. With the amount of idiots out there in the world, I don't trust people to work on my stuff unless I know them and have a reason to trust them.

On top of that, the $25 I spent for the obd2 Bluetooth dongle and torque is way worth it. Being able to read the codes and know what your in for before you take it to the shop, and being able to clear codes pays for itself.

I may do the same. I need to get a new smartphone and something like Torque sounds useful enough to pick up an Android phone.

They would make us all by a new head unit they don't believe in fixing glitches they just make new models with the same glitches. I have a after market alpine nav in my other vehicle and it does the same things the uconnect does reboots freezes all that good stuff. Love it when it works though best on the market IMO well Audi's google based system is better.
I found the infotainment system in the Jeep pretty awesome when it worked. It is really good to know that the reboots might just be some Alpine flakiness that can eventually be solved with a software update.

I think this knowledge will keep me from freaking out if it cuts out while driving. At least now I know it doesn't automatically mean the car is about to shut off like it did for me and my wife.

For all that it appears to do? Sure. And since it works with my iPhone I don't need to get another device/buy all new apps unless some other compelling reason comes along.

Just to clarify a few things the head unit is NOT manufactured by Alpine. The RA3/RA4 head units are manufactured by Harmon. As far as the speakers and amplifiers there is the base system, the alpine system, and the Harmon kardon system. Regardless of which speakers/amp/sub you have the head units are still manufactured by Harmon.

I think I will look into something so I can get the codes, but that $70 one? The big draw is that it will tell me when I am driving inefficiently.... I know I am already. I like to accelerate quickly. I tend to drive fast. And those are not behaviors I am trying to change.

Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

Well the dongle is at least $20 - 30 and the software is worth quite a bit too. As an iOS dev myself, I know how expensive it can be to developed a quality app. I'm happy to support good software.

Not to get too far off topic, it just seems like the built-in fuel economy gauge in the Jeep does the same thing, and I am not likely to change my driving style much more. The OBD stuff is the same as Torque, and Android already has free parking reminder apps. Lots of redundancy for $70 is all. But iOS people seem used to paying more for apps... Maybe at $30-40 including the dongle I would be tempted to go with this instead of just the dongle + $5 app.
