Heh. I have an indie mechanic who works on my other Jeep (in my avatar). He can be cranky as hell, but he's awesome and I recommend him to everyone I meet. We joke now, but the first 10 times I brought my Saabs into him, it was straight business.

As for Lemon, yes, it absolutely qualifies. Trouble is, Chrysler is not answering the letter sent by my lawyer requesting a buyback. He thinks it's because I don't have my car back yet. When he gets the official fourth repair service invoice, I think he will try to push things along.

We should not be so inconvenienced with new vehicles. It's just a travesty.

After all of your issues, I would tell the dealer you don't feel safe in it until you have a Chrysler tech call you and walk you through why they replaced the transfer case, and what that is supposed to fix that the other "fixes" did not work on. Tell them once that happens, you will pick it up.
I'm going to speak to someone about it -- exactly those questions. They owe me that much. Trouble is, if I make that demand as a prerequisite to picking up the car, they'll just give me some guy in service who will give me a good answer and then I have to take the car anyway.

There's no winning until I get a new vehicle. And even then, I'm not sure. I'm counting on lightning not striking twice, but who knows.

When you are talking to "some guy in service" Take down his name. Very deliberately. Then, take notes on what he says. Make sure he knows you are taking notes. Then tell him, at the end of it, that the Jeep has had other fixes, for the same issue. Remind him that the issues are serious, and could cause bodily harm. Tell him that your lawyer will contact him, personally, should the Jeep fail again, since it is him, personally, telling you it is fixed. Especially if it fails while on the road, causing other damage.

Yea, tell me about it. I had to give my wife the other car WITH A/C while I rode my motorcycle. The A/C compressor clutch had seized up while we were on our way back from the Grand Canyon. That particular pulley wasn't spinning freely which meant if I were to turn the motor off, I couldn't start it up with the drag created by the pulley. I waited to get home and once I turned off the motor, it all went downhill from there.

What I realized was that I'm sure I could have bought another CX7 and been fine. We were bored of the crossover though and went the SUV route instead.

That incident alone has cause me to buy extended warranties for everything now. I just don't want to bother with the hassle. I sure do hope you can get this shit fixed and put behind you. I know the feeling.

Thanks. My suspicion of possible Jeep quality (or lack of it) is what led me to extend the 36 month warranty to 39 months (for the full lease term). I wasn't even willing to take a chance on NOT having three months of coverage.

When I bought my Wrangler, I did a lot of research. Reading the forums, it seemed people either got good Jeeps or bad Jeeps. There was very little in between. A couple minor issues for some of them, but mostly it was "we're fine" or "we're $#@ed." I knew I wanted a Dana 44, 4.0L, 5-speed, etc., but my *real* primary requirement was a one-owner. I figured if someone had kept their Jeep for ten years, it was bound to be a good one. And on top of that, Wranglers are so simple, anyone can work on them (including myself), and parts are freely available (usually from multiple aftermarket suppliers).

So far, that was a good bet. My Wrangler has been the most reliable used car I've ever bought. But it's the ONLY exception I will make to that policy from now on. For my family car, I never want to be out of warranty again. Even though I've had great luck with models actually built in Japan, I know even those can have issues. For me, that means leasing. If we get in another accident like with the Acura, I want to be able to walk away from it - turn in the keys and be done. Fortunately, the Acura was totaled ($28K worth of damage). If it hadn't, I would've been stuck with a salvage title. I'm not taking that risk again for a car costing that much. Leasing is the way to go, at least for the primary car, with no money down. I'll let the manufacturer (warranty) and the leasing company (depreciation, accident risk. etc.) take all the risk.

Live and learn, eh?

Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

My wife just picked up the Jeep. Looks like it passed the 1000 mile mark while it was in for service (the dealer has now put about 500-600 miles on the vehicle).

She asked why the transfer case needed replacing and they said Chrysler told them something about the clutches was "too tight." I'll get a better explanation later today. They said Chrysler is using the information to do some checking of other vehicles.

They also said we should be hearing from Chrysler about this, and that if they are asked they are absolutely recommending that we get a new vehicle, so they are finally advocating for us. I hope that will come in useful down the road.

But for now, I hope this is just a solid vehicle for us and that the worst is behind us until this thing is Lemon'd.

Good luck with it AMC. Keeping my fingers crossed that you have no issues.

Re: 2014 GC Totally $#@% dead

So hopefully a semi-final update (well, until the next one -- whether it be vehicle replacement or another issue):

Drove the Jeep last night and LOVE IT! But that goes without saying. Even through all this, I have loved the vehicle. Just wanted it to work correctly, which last night it was. Finally.

Received a call from Chrysler (probably from my website query) and they said they had spoken to the dealership about my "extensive" repairs and that they were going to escalate my issues to the "Chrysler Business Office" and the GM of my dealership. He said they take these things very seriously and although he hoped my vehicle was now fixed, he would still escalate the issue.

So what was the issue? Check it out... Some of this is paraphrased.

Complaint: Service 4WD System message

Cause: Scan vehicle for codes - code present is C1476-00. Check circuits T315 T316 K504 T313 K594 for high resistance - all good

Action: R/R drivetrain control and motor per STAR. Problem still active. Replace position sensor per STAR and perform battery disconnect. Codes came back. Load test all circuits. Consulted with (name withheld) on STAR hotline 5/21 and sent STAR the scan report. C1476-00 was not in their report, so case was escalated to engineering. As of 5/23, all STAR recommended procedures have been followed. 5/31 - perform relearn process manually. 6/3 - per (names withheld) R/R transfer case. 6/5 TC replaced, relearn system with series of key cycles and per STAR roadtest vehicle extensively. Vehicle driving/performing as designed. All system functioning with no warning lights.

And there we have it. The guy at Town & Country service is supposed to call me tomorrow to make sure everything is OK and I will find out exactly what the issue with the transfer case was.

Until then, I hope our vehicle is DONE with all the repairs and fallout from the bad ground and I hope it will be 100% reliable for our upcoming vacation.

Looks like a lot of us here are finally getting our vehicles into shape. I'm still crossing my fingers for a couple of you though (and keeping them crossed for my own vehicle).

Being so completely mentally exhausted by all this, I'm tempted to just stop the lemon proceeding, even though most of the miles on this car are now the dealer's. I don't want to negotiate another lease. I really just wanted a functional, reliable vehicle. If I have that now, and let's hope, I'm eager to have all this BS behind me. I guess we'll see IF Chrysler ever gets back to my lawyer and IF the vehicle continues to be reliable. We should probably know soon. We never managed to string together more than a few days without an issue.

Interesting: C1476-00 OUT OF RANGE: TRANSFER CASE CLUTCH POSITION (From '12 but doubt that it changed).
