2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Since this post was resurrected I will add that my dealer did reimburse me. Wheels did get numerous knicks and scratches on them from both places which still makes me mad. The car still rides smooth.

2014 limited w/ 20" srt replicas and Goodyear forteras.

Steering wheel shake is only felt sometimes and felt between the speeds of 120-140kph

Any idea on why it would only shake some of the time?

Regarding wheel vibration , I never really found out what the cause was , Chrysler replaced the vehicle .
I did read after my vehicle was replaced they had issues with wheel bearings .
Did you have vibration with factory wheels?

I have SRT replicas 20"X10" with 295/45/20 on all four wheels and no vibration on the replacement Jeep

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

With the factory 18" w/ michelins I never noticed a shake. With the 20x9 srt reps with goodyear forteras I notice a shake sometimes at 120 kph.

What gets me is when it doesn't shake because it's the same road surface and condition of when it would shake.

However, I do notice that my driver front tire is overinflated by 1-2 psi...I don't think this would make a difference at all but will adjust accordingly.

If you don't have any vibration with 18" I would think it is a wheel or tire .
Have you tried rotating ?
If you could find somebody who could do road force balance on the wheels and tires this may help diagnose the problem.

I have a Mustang GT and I put new 19" wheels with Hankook tires and I had wheel vibration and it also varied in intensity .
As it turns out the tires were bad , they were all purchased new .

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

I have a 2015 Jeep GC Altitude, it started having steering wheel vibrations/shake around 5500 miles a couple times pretty severe.I
just had tires rotated which didn't make much difference the shaking is
pretty constant but not real bad any over 60 mph.

I have appointment on the 24th at dealer to test drive and figure this out
hopefully it's a simple fix. Don't want to compare apples and oranges, but
I just went though this with a 2014 Tacoma which couldn't be fixed and was bought back although symptoms were more severe.

I plan on bringing in the service bulletin for 2014 to show them even though
it might not apply, from my observing the steering seems way to sensitive
anymore I notice this around the same time the steering wheel vibrations/shake started.

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Just had my front 2 tires road forced balanced, seemed a bit smoother on the same stretch of highway I've felt the shake at, will test again tonight.

Maybe static balancing would have sufficed as I found 2 strips of stick on wheel weights laying on my driveway....

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Dealer just balanced all four seems better, but steering is definitely sensitive
over rough highway. I told dealer that this all started around 5500 miles, one thing I loved so much about my GC is the solid feel to the steering I also showed the the service bulletin even though is was for 2014 GC and mines a 2015 GC .

So I'm going to try it for a week and see if I want to pursue this issue, I should note if the highway is smooth steering wheel is steady.

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Are you on Goodyear forteras?

And is your steering wheel shaking violently on the highway or it's more like a vibration?

After the balancing, The shake on mine is not as bad anymore but on certain stretches of highway it vibrates a little bit. It's very minor so I'm just gonna leave it until I need new tires.

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Yes I have Goodyear Forteras and only had a violent shake once when I accelerated hard and hit a rough part of highway, funny thing is I tried to duplicate it and couldn't this was before the dealership balanced my wheels
yesterday.

All my tries are wearing wearing well so I have a long ways to go before I'll need new one's, I'm thinking of contacting jeep customer support I them to hear from as of us as possible. I thinking the service bulletin they might extend
into 2015 model if they hear enough complaints.

Re: 2014 GCs that have steering shimmy over 60MPH

Update since wheels were all re-balanced, after a week I still notice shimmy in steering wheel comes and goes. I noticed on the link below that there has been a couple service bulletins that point towards these issues including steering movement over rough roads.

Jeep Grand Cherokee WK2 - 2011-2016 Grand Cherokee Service Bulletins and Recalls

TSB #22-001-14

TSB #22-003-14a

both apply to 2014 models , but I think at some point they will be extended to 2015 models.Has anyone had luck getting these applied to there vehicle, my claims they couldn't duplicate but still re-balance all four wheels saying they were out of balanced.
