2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude Headlight Stain?

I just bought a used 2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude with only 3,000 miles on it.

My first chance to drive it at night was last night and I had to turn around before I got a block from my house.

It seems like the light output from the headlights is terrible. I was only able to see the light going about 10 feet in front of the truck.

After looking at it again today I saw this and some weird light patterns on the wall of my garage. Is this something others have experienced? I read the threads of the fogging headlights but I have not seen any water in my headlights only staining.

I don't see anything with the outside lenses.....is it the inside projector lense?

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude Headlight Stain?

Take a pic of the pattern aiming at a wall. It should have a clean-ish cut off with not much scatter above there, these lights are pretty good, but if you're looking for a laser beam or visible light trail going through the air, uhm no. Actually the efforts are to focus the beam on functional areas and avoid others now, I like being able to see tree tops off-road but my headlights do the job pretty well on road. The slightly blue cloudiness you see in the plastic is the intense at that point light going through less than the best quality plastic.<--looks like this on almost all jeeps. It could also be a very small amount of humidity inside the housing that will evaporate or "burn off" it's normal but total crap. Jeep even makes allowances for it in the manual as they do for many shortcomings saying run the headlights to clear it up.

If it's anything but these things, actual distortion or impurities in the lense or a bad, worse than normal, seal or quality it's a warranty issue. Good luck, toss a pic up of the pattern from say 20 feet it'll tell a lot.

I don't see anything obvious either. Since it's a '14, as long as it's under 36k you should be able to take it in for warranty.

Too many mods to list for each, so let's just say a lot was done over the years.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude Headlight Stain?

I upgraded my bulbs to Sylvania silverstar ultra and it nearly doubled the amount of light my headlights put out on the road now. Wider and farther. the stock halogen bulbs are dim.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude Headlight Stain?

What I think people are missing is that our base low beam bulb is a 55W bulb to begin with and any "upgrade" is really more of a color change or maybe a slightly greater output in light but not substantial as the factory bulbs are already a very good quality. As well the pattern cannot be affected by the bulb itself only the housing for the placement of the bulb in the housing. That being said I have Silverstar ultra's in there right now and actually prefer the Silverstar.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Altitude Headlight Stain?

If you look at the front part of the plastic lens you will see a half moon shape that looks cloudy. That same shape transfers to the wall when the lights are on. It seems like it is blocking the light from the projector. It is also on the inside of the lens not the outside, so I can't clean it off. Almost like it had water in it then dried and stained.

It could be inside the projector too, I haven't check that yet.

+1

I also upgraded my fogs with those bulbs too and it made a huge difference at night! The stock bulbs looked terrible and way to dim for a new SUV.

My low beam pattern (with and without the stock bulbs) is a little scattered right where the main focal spot is, but otherwise its very sharp going horizontally. I actually brought the low beams down about an 1-1.5" and was able to get more visible light down on the street ahead of me vs. the stock bulb height, which to me seemed way to high.

Well I found part of the issue. I bought some Osram Nght Breaker Unlimited bulbs and went to go put them in an found this:

I would almost assume these are NOT stock bulbs. Look like Ebay specials to me?

lol

These European Spec H11 Osram Nightbreaker Unlimited halogen bulbs have been VERY popular for people looking for a simple halogen change.
