2014 Grand Cherokee Limited lift gate won't latch closed

I've tried a search with no luck for a solution on my issue.

The automatic lift gate on my 2014 GC Limited won't latch closed. The auto up and down still works fine. It just gets all the way down to the bottom, makes a motorized noise like it is latching but it doesn't hold. The door looks pretty close to normally closed, but then if I push up on the door without touching the release button it will lift right up. It also shows me that the rear door is open on the EVIC. It has happened twice now the first time it luckily fixed itself later that day. But this time it has not. I've got an appt scheduled at the dealer but hoping a quick fix that I can find will save me the trip.

I've tried to make sure nothing is blocking it from closing on the inside and nothing obvious is stuck in the latch from where I can look at it. I've also tried disconnecting the battery for 5+ mins to see if that might do the trick.

Anyone else have any trouble with their lift gate not latching?
Thanks!

Glad that it appears that not too many owners on here have had the same trouble with the lift gate not latching. Annoying for me sure, but glad it hasn't been something effecting too many people!

If anyone has any suggestions for trying to fix this in the meantime, it would be appreciated, thanks!

Only suggestion I can offer is take it to your dealer or a local body shop to have it checked; perhaps all that is needed is an adjustment. If it is a hit and miss problem, try not to use the lift gate until you do. I have had no such issue on mine, actually have had no issues at all.

It took a few days, but the dealer got a new latch mechanism and replaced it under warranty. Thankfully everything is back to normal.

Just a side note in case this happens to anybody else. I have the notifications set in Uconnect, to notify me if the theft alarm goes off. When my jeep was parked at the dealership over the weekend, waiting to be fixed. My alarm went off for seven hours straight and it ended up killing the battery. I think the combination of the rear door that still wasn't latching, being pushed just enough by the wind, (it can get pretty windy here in Las Vegas) while the rest of the car was locked, was enough to keep setting off the alarm. Since no one was at the dealership on Sunday while it was happening, and I was out of town at the time, there was nothing that could be done. I did call the Uconnect helpline to see if they would tell me that at least my jeep was still at the dealership, and not on its way to Mexico, but they said that they can't look up the location of the vehicle without a police order. My service rep said that they charged the battery while they were working on the latch Monday, and it tested normal after all that.
