2014 Grand cherokee paint issues

Hey guys, I bought a 2014 GC summit in crystal granite. on the left front fender a flake of clear coat came off (i've never had this happen before). it is about 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch in size. The paint had been totally normal before. It did not look repainted but I'm wondering if it had been. when I bought it it said 1 owner clean carfax.

does anyone have carfax access to run it, I just want to make sure there were no accidents. Debating on bringing it to the jeep dealer v. local body shop to fix.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee paint issues

If it's clear flaking off then I can only imagine it was cheaply resprayed. It could have been something minor that the dealership may have had reshot on the lot. Yes, I have actually seen guys in the parking lot more or less spray painting used vehicles.
If you want to find our for sure if parts have been repainted any shop can tell you. If you know what to look for yourself you can tell just by looking at it.
Regardless what's going on there, that does not sound like a factory paint issue to me, and if it is then I would be very surprised!
Also, pictures help tremendously. See if you can snap an angled shot that clearly shows clearcoat texture. You can usually spot a resprayed panel by the clear coat texture (orange peel) not matching original perfectly.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee paint issues

Can't run the carfax so I'm no help there but...

There's no Mineral Gray for 2014-15. I'm assuming you have Granite.

If it's flaking, it might be a third party job done.

Would it be possible to catch a good shot of it and post it up for us to see?

All 4 of the Grand Cherokees I have ever owned since 2009 have had very decent paint quality. Now my 14 Lexus is a whole other story

As was said, definitely a re-spray and poor one.

the first pic is a close up of the chip on the left front quarter panel, the second picture is zoomed out. the missing clear is on the top by the window.

the 3rd pic is of the right front quarter with a tiny chip of clear that looks like it is off.

I took it to a body shop today and the guy was a little puzzled because it didn't clearly look like it was repainted but he also felt that rarely sees anything like that on factory paint. He suggested trying to get it covered under warranty and thought that they should cover it (he said he couldn't imagine why they wouldn't cover it). He said to bring it back if they don't cover it.

So I'll check with the dealer.

Granite is the worst for paint quality from Chrysler. I'll spare you the detail but the paint was so bad on mine Chrysler approved an entire car repaint on my granite grey....They would not take it back or do much else. You would see the paint defect (shark skin) on cloudy days more than sunny. Ended up trading it back for an overland silver as a $4k paint job on a brand new car is just silly, also they would not guarrantee the paint - love my GC but after driving exactly one year with a CEL on my 2014(DEF/Cat), bad ass paint on a 2015 Summit and having to spend countless days chasing people for warranty.... No more GC next time. No Chrysler.

Yikes man I'm sorry to hear that. I remember reading about Granite being pretty much a defective color. I figured the new paint system would have helped though. I'm curious to see if it did or not. I have a Granite Overland that was built last month.. I'll be keeping an eye for paint defects.

Re: 2014 Grand cherokee paint issues

I know it would be more difficult to see this in a picture of granite pearl compared to my white, but see if you can replicate a picture like this that shows the clear coat texture. See if it is consistent between the front quarter panel and the drivers door. The "orange peel" effect should be identical between the panels. Typically any aftermarket job you will see some variations in this and it usually wont be a perfect match. When looking at your Jeep at these angles can you see any changes in clear coat texture between the panel in question and another panel? Also, look in any crevices or in the wheel well to see if there are any signs of paint over spray. If everything looks good then who knows maybe it really is defective OEM paint. In my new Summit there is a dust imperfection in the drivers door which is noticeable.

thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. Also, going to the dealer on tuesday so we'll see what they say (I'm not the 1st owner so doubt that they would cover it but you never know)
