Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Problems - Australia

Hello Everyone

Newbie to the site and to the GC. Just purchased a MY14 limited CRD and have put a mere 200km on the clock and the problems have begun.

Driving home from the dealer after taking delivery, I noticed a valve lash type sound at any speed over 60kmh under load. Back to the dealer, get one of the "techs" to come for a road test and his diagnosis is noisy injectors. Has anyone here had to have their injectors replaced due to them being noisy.

After hours of research I have come up with zero. Not sure this diagnosis is correct and something else in the chain is causing this tappet like sound.

It disappears when your off the pedal and under certain throttle loads. Only happens when the engine is warm.

Any info would be great.

Cheers
Jim

I get a 'tappety' sound sometimes when the engine's cold, but it disappears after a couple of minutes. I don't actually believe it's the tappets, more likely fuel scheduling on cold starts.
It's always done it and I don't believe it's a problem.

I do agree that when it's cold the diesel clatter is normal to an extent. It has become louder than normal in the last few weeks when coming to temp. However when warm and re-started and goes thru the sequence of sounding like some piece of 1950's farm machinery the question must be asked. Strange with my vehicle that after the re-program mid year, even during the cold start cycle that there has been no evidence of the excessive diesel clatter (detonation?) until recent as is again happening.
I will ask the question then: What has been changed between the 2011/2013 diesel and the 14/15 as there is a definite difference in diesel noise between the two (Mates 12 NO PROBLEMS), the 14 being generally better unless doing it's THING?

the PROBLEM is, after a song or two (or for the first three months, track 2 on Drake's, "Never be the same" mixtape) it freezes up, and remains that way for hours. When this happens both Bluetooth and USB refuse to play leaving me the use of regular, XM radio or the CD player.
What's up with that?
It is to the point now where [god forbid] i must charge my phone, I will switch it immediately from the auto USB once plugged to anything but in fear of freezing my music.

2nd: I live in SUnny California, and after 6000 mi. I changed my oil (filter, reset monitoring etc..) and now at 8836, my oil gauge says that I've reached 51% oil life, which is lower than when I changed it, 2-3 months ago.
What's up with that? Is that normal?
From work to home and back is less than 6 miles, and I don't cruise too tough...................help please.

3rd: Now when driving over my complexes speed bumps, my overhead light will come on [chime included]. I do not fly over them, so
WHAT'S UP WITH THAT?
This is a Australian GC thread so might not be much assistance for you

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Problems - Australia

Tyre pressure warning worked a treat today, warning came up that the RH rear had lost pressure (down to 1.5 bar). Drove to a local tyre dealer and he found an imbedded screw in the tyre.
Love this Jeep...

Must agree there is some inconstancy with these CRD's.
My old Nissan Patrol always sounded the same, plenty of diesel 'clatter' which went away at about 90 kph. I owned this vehicle from new until I sold it with 300,000 on the clock.
The MY12 Jeep on the other hand is a bit strange in this regard, I've noticed sometimes at low speeds that it sounds more like a petrol engine with very little diesel clatter, then other times it is a little noisy and the 'clatter' is more noticeable, something is happening here but I don't know what.
Maybe something to do with the injectors causing a slightly different detonation cycle?
Have you had a chance to check the U.S. site for info?

Clear coat coming off?
Might have been damaged and then fixed before they gave it to you. Duck into a panel shop.and get them to have a look and then take it up with the dealer.

Have seen comments in recent times since the TSB for "detonation" and am told only a few are doing it. Must have been more than a few seeing there is a TSB. It appears to be a fuel scheduling problem mainly after re-start and not all the time. Could be like the air-conditioning, keeps forgetting what 20deg is. SORRY! Very difficult to determine when it's going to happen but obvious when it's does. It is noticeably down on power for the short time that it does occur. I believe from what I read that the glow-plugs on these vehicles somehow re-schedule the fuel when ON during start and when warming up, so maybe that's the link. Unfortunately Jeep know what emission tweaks they did to get this engine up to specifications other than running it hotter. Being serviced Thursday hopefully all will be good again.

Re: 2014 Grand Cherokee Problems - Australia

Now that the dpf has been replaced at Jeep's expense on my new 2014 Grand Cherokee, it has been working well. It amazes me to find all these people on different forums who think it is somehow acceptable for the regen to fail because of not taking it on long highway drives. Look, it's a 4WD! Here in Australia if you're caught on a rough outback trail 1000 km from nowhere, and you can't go faster than 20km/hr, it is physically impossible to drive at Highway speeds.

That's what 4WDs are used for - for outback driving. I've done a lot of it. If this kind of thing happens when driving in a remote location, it's potentially very dangerous.

In short, it's not a 4WD for Australian conditions. One such fault in 300 vehicles is unacceptable. The dealer told me it was made in Canada. This was a lie. It's designed in Canada and built by Neolithic era Yanks who are still using feet and inches. They don't even have international quality standards over there despite being Italian owned.

I bought a Jeep........... Sucked in.

Mine, and many others, failed at regeneration even with extensive highway driving. Mine too was finally replaced some time ago now, and since then has worked faultlessly.

Mine will probably work faultlessly too. It just leaves a bad taste that new vehicles would have all these faults. This is something that is avoidable. It reflects poor quality management. These days, you buy a Toyota Prada and you expect it to work without any faults. You take it for granted that when you buy a brand new vehicle it will not have any faults.

If Airbus had this kind of problem, there would be hundreds of aircraft dropping from the skies. That doesn't happen because they have built-in quality systems.

So it's entirely possible to manage out issues like this. Not only is it entirely possible, but it's the expectation, especially when you pay $80,000+ for a new vehicle. It is unacceptable to have this kind of fault rate, and Fiat must be looking at the problem very closely.
