2014 JGC Crash Test Results - Video, Pics, Concerns

Hey Guys, some of you may have already seen this, but I did some research on the Grand Cherokee crash test and it does really great in most categorys except for one, The Small Overlap Frontal crash. Which is the most common type of crash.

A big part of the reason it does poor is because of 2 simple things.... the parking brake and side airbags not extending far enough. I know people have concerned over the parking brake before sticking out so much... after researching it, that definitely is a cause for concern if involved in a wreck.

See the photos below, the parking brake is bent straight down... say goodbye to your left leg...
Intrusion of the parking brake pedal, door hinge pillar, and instrument panel contributed to a significant risk of injury to the left lower leg.


During the crash, the seat belt allowed the dummy to move too far foward, as is eveident from the gap between the seat back and the dummy's torso. The side curtain airbag did not extend far enough forward toward the A-Pillar.

What do you guys think of all this???

Makes me wonder why they wouldn't just put the parking brake as a hand lever near the arm rest or something, or make it an electric parking brake with a push of a button.

It would seem the lesson to be learned is that if you are about to hit something very heavy and hard at a very glancing angle, do your best to steer toward the object so you hit it head on.

I've read a statistic that says 1/4 of all serious injuries/deaths occur in small overlap type crashes, but I haven't seen that it's "the most common" type of crash. Is that true? Do you have a source?

Also, keep in mind that test replicates two vehicles of the same weight hitting each other at the same speed. The Jeep GC is definitely larger than the majority of vehicles on the road, that gives it a significant advantage in nearly all types of vehicle vs vehicle collisions. Bad for the other guy though.

Not that it helps, but the JGC did better than many other SUVs in that test, including the new Highlander and the Honda Pilot. Not as good as a few Chevy's though. It's a relatively new test and mfrs. are struggling to alter structural designs to protect better against this type of crash. All cars will get better with time.

Can't find the source, but I did read somewhere that most crashes are rarely ever directly head on, they are almost always from one of the sides (as the video tests). Which makes sense considering alot of these accidents occur either on a 2 lane road hitting another vehicle offset or going off road into a tree or pole. Which both would result in the impact being directed in one small area versus the entire front end.

This was mentioned as one of the reasons for the small overlap test.
No idea if it is true, but journalists would not lie would they?

I would agree that offset is common. You can have a head on with other cars, poles, buildings (I suppose!) and other obstacles. The instinct is to try and turn away, thereby reducing the portion of the vehicle that contacts the obstacle if you fail to steer around it. The question is, is a 25% offset THAT much more common than the 40% offset? Plus add in all the t-bones that are totally unrelated and I can't see that a 25% is the MOST COMMON type of crash. I'm sure it's common, just unsure if it's "most common".

Certainly I'd like my vehicle to do well in all types of crashes. But this offset thing really limits the available cars right now. There just aren't that many which handle it well. The Jeep GC is in the unfortunate majority at the moment. The good news again is that it's heavy. That doesn't help against immovable objects (telephone poles) but all other things being equal I'd rather have a Mediocre heavy car than a mediocre or worse small car.

And honestly, the Jeep GC didn't get their highest rating, but it wasn't worst either. There's room for improvement for sure.

Now then, here's hoping no one does a real world crash test of their JGC! :-)

I think the best advice is.. dont hit anything.

I myself, drive with both feet (its a bad habit that I still have from when I had a 68 camaro lol) so my left foot is the one on the brake problem solved! lol

Ok I digress my comment saying it's the "Most common" but I would guess it's probably close to it.

Now when I drive, I cringe when looking at the parking brake. The thing is rock solid and lines up perfectly with my left leg, I tried sitting with my left leg in closer to my right to avoid it and no way could I sit like that...It's too uncomfortable to try and keep my knees together. So looks like I'm screwed if this ever happened (praying it never does).

Hopefully Jeep will learn from the crash test results and add an electronic parking brake button in the future to remove that lever. Wishful thinking!

In this case, that's a good habit!!

Anyone know if the Parking Brake pedal is just bolted on behind the plastic trim?? I never use the damn thing anyways, so if it is, I might just try unbolting it and keep it in my garage. Then later if I end up traveling somewhere with steep hills where I might need it, I can just bolt it back on.

I've had the Jeep for almost a year now and haven't touched that lever, so if is removeable, I'd have no problem parting ways with it during my everyday driving.

...or when you go to get your States safety/inspection sticker.

Yep, an electric parking brake switch would have solved this safety matter...that and an improved knee air bag.

That's exactly what I did in my 2003 GC.

I was on solid ice going down hill.

I was afraid to turn away from the telephone pole I was headed towards because I was worried I'd hit it sideways. I had hopped I would stop in time. But didn't.

Slammed smack in the middle. $10K damage.

That was at 65K miles. Ran it to 217K. Thought it would be a sure lemon after that. But it was great.

2014 Jeep didn't do super on this test, but did better than most.

Move the offset 6 inches either way and who faired best I bet would change quite a bit.
