2014 Limited License Plate LEDs Burn Out

Hey all,

I've done a search for this but found no threads, so I thought I'd add one. So on my 2014 Limited, the license plate lights keep burning out. Repeatedly. The assembly costs $35 to replace, so I've stopped replacing them (did it once and the dealer that sold to me also did it once), and I'm going to have the dealer look at it next week to see what they can do. One of the service techs said he's seen this issue before, but what I'm not sure about is what they can do to fix it, since this is an OEM light and the problem is that the light burns too hot, causing the LED to melt the housing (partially) and burn itself out after only about a half hour of running. Replacing it does nothing - they all do it. And I don't think replacing the wires would do a thing, because it doesn't seem to be an issue with any wiring, rather, it's an issue with the design of the light itself.

To be clear, these lights are not like in the older WK2 (10-13), where you have a plastic cover and a light bulb inside that which can be replaced. On these cars, the ligtht and housing are all 1 inseperable unit that plugs directly into the wire coming out of the tailgate.

Here are a few photos for reference of the LH side light assembly:

While the LH side light, though burned out, doesn't look so bad, here's a photo of the RH side light as it currently looks after burning itself out:

Has anyone else seen or had this issue?

Wow... that's the first I've ever seen or heard of that.

I'd have to wonder if that's seeing too much voltage or current... seems odd that would happen a couple of times for you and in such a short time period of having them on.

Find a new dealer, that should have been warranty before the 1st 35 buck one happened..yes, bulbs are not covered
My dealer changed a headlight bulb for me a few years back, and said sorry for the inconvenience

You need to have the dealer check the wiring harness. That burning is a sign of to much current flowing through the LED circuit. You might have a short somewhere.

Mike.

That's what I thought.

Thanks man. Figured it might be something like that, I just know so little about electrical issues, I'm more of a mechanical/engine guy. I'm scheduling it to be looked at this week.

haha, I don't have a garage, and the issue is just with those lights, so I think I'm ok. They're both burned out and I haven't replaced them - no need to yet - so nothing happening back there.

I'm relieved I bought the extended warranty which covers all electrical issues as well, because if it's the wiring harness that has to be ripped out and replaced, might be quite the job.

It's not so much the lights as the wiring harness attached to them that could also overheat and cause a full on car fire.

LEDs should never blow in such a violent way like that. They should just quit when they fail.

These are being cooked as though there's a bad regulator in the mix.

Don't forget - some here have had their vehicles go up in smoke (or nearly so) via a short in the light in the sun visor.

Yeah as mentioned the issue isn't just with those lights, infact its not those lights at all. Those LED units should pretty much never have to be replaced over the life of the vehicle. The issue is elsewhere! Also, this would be covered under the factory warranty and certainly wouldn't have required an extended warranty to cover. There appears to be a major electrical issue (or might be a simple issue), but could have serious effects and it would without a doubt be something Jeep needs to resolve...extended warranty or not.

Got it. Problem is...I'm out of warranty. So it'll only get replaced if they decide they want to be nice to me. If they don't, luckily I have the warranty purchased so I don't have to pay for it.

Re: 2014 Limited License Plate LEDs Burn Out

So I just wanted to follow up with you guys on this issue, it's fixed now.

The dealer fixed it, and the way they did it is by replacing the wire harness piece in the trunk lid that connects to both the license plate lights as well as to the electric trunk lid handle/switch. The reason the fix took a long time is that the dealer had to order the wire harness piece from overseas, and it took a long time for it to get here.

Side note: they did not tell me exactly what was wrong with the wire harness (short? exposed wire? who knows?)
But, in any event, the new wire harness piece fixed the issue, 2 new LED lights are there now, and haven't burned out since.
