2014 Overland - A loss for words....

Hello,

I have been lurking here for a while and I am wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same issue I currently have. I purchased my jeep back in late June. It truly is one of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I love the tech, the ride, and everything about the vehicle. It has had some minor issues though.

The first issue was minor in comparison to what just happened. The radio / phone would not sync up properly. The messaging icon would not (and still doesn't) populate right away. It waits about 20 minutes or so before it does. So I took the vehicle in for service and they updated the radio software. I also wanted them to address the vehicles performance in ECO mode where the vehicle seems to stumble and regain power. I am a very conservative driver and I'm light on the peddle to save gas. The service department stated it is normal behavior.

The second issue was with the air suspension system. I normally lower the vehicle to "exit / entry" to make it easier to get in and out of the vehicle. I was going to work one morning and the EVIC just continued to say "lifting". The lights by the 4WD selector were blinking for the suspension. I pulled over and shut it off opened the door and got out and got back in and started out again. The EVIC said it was lifting and then it said that the suspension system was hot (or something to that effect) and that it needed to cool down before it could be used again.

I made it to a stop for coffee and left the vehicle sit for a few minutes and started on my way again. This time the vehicle did what it normally does and lifted and went into AERO mode. At this point I decided to make an appointment to have it checked out.

I made a service appointment to address several things. One being that the messaging icon was still taking 15 to 20 minutes to populate for my text messages. Two, the problem with the ECO mode, and three, the air suspension system. They advised me that they had updated the radio again to address the problem with the messaging. This is not a critical thing but a nice thing to have. They also addressed the ECO mode issue with the engine seeming like it was stalling and then suddenly regaining power and throwing you back in your seat.

They advised that they seen the code for the suspension and would have to order a part to correct the issue. When they replaced the part needed for the suspension system they also reprogrammed the PCM for the issue with the ECO mode. I went for a drive with the technician and the ECO problem with the stalling and loss of power seemed much better. I also advised them of the issue with the remote start where the AC doesn’t appear to remain on after you get in and press the start button. This again was just a minor issue.

So I left that day last week and some of my issues have been corrected. The messaging still does not populate right away, it still takes 15 minutes or so for it to come up for some reason. They were going to look into this issue with Chrysler and the remote start issue and get back to me. The air suspension seems to be fixed with the new part so that’s good. The ECO problem is much better after the re-programming. Life is good, or so I thought.

Yesterday, I purchased a manual pallet jack to allow me to move pellets in my garage for my pellet stove. I rented a small trailer from U-haul and went to pick up the pallet jack. I picked it up, secured it and got it home, unloaded it and was on my way back to U-haul to return it. I was driving along at 55 MPH and I heard and felt this “clunk”. It shook the vehicle and it did scare me. I thought something happened to the trailer. I pulled over and put the vehicle in park and shut it down. I checked the trailer and the ball and safety chains were attached as they should be. I started the vehicle and put it in drive. I attempted to accelerate and I heard another clunk at which time the check engine light came on and my tachometer indicated the engine was not under any strain by it revving freely. The Jeep would only go into 5th gear. I was almost back to U-haul so I drove the short distance there and dropped the trailer off.

I drove it directly to the dealer. I had to stop several times on the way there and the Jepp would not shift out of 5th gear. They checked it out and stated that the issue is with what I believe he said was a clutch plate or something to that effect. So they now have it in for service. I will be provided a rental car for Monday. So here is where I stand on this. This is my first Chrysler product. I have always steered clear of them due to their previous poor reputation. I have owned Acura’s and others and the feature set and tech that the Jeep has won me over. I really do like the Jeep, but these things are just not acceptable to me. I just passed 5000 miles and I expect little things to happen, ECO, phone, air suspension, are all “small potatoes” to me but a transmission issue at just over 5000 miles is not acceptable.

I’m not sure what I am going to do at this point? I will be in contact with Chrysler but do I have a leg to stand on? Nowadays, everything is recorded including service records for a vehicle. So a few years down the road (if I still have it) I will want to sell it. Whatever happens with the transmission will be recorded on the Carfax report. I for one would never purchase any car that had transmission issues regardless if it was repaired or replaced. The value of my Jeep has plummeted through the floor.

Has anyone here had experience with Chrysler with a similar situation? I just don’t trust the longevity of my Jeep. Any advice here is greatly appreciated, I’m not sure how to handle this situation?

Re: 2014 Overland - A loss for words....

Sorry for your bad experience. My JGC has only 2500 miles and I hope I don't have problems you have. That said, if fixed correctly under warranty I wouldn't worry too much, except for the major PITA service visits.

Keep records of everything and maybe read your States lemon laws. I recently replaced 2004 JGC with 200k miles on it and extremely reliable with little non wear issues, it's still in family and used by son. On new Jeep I bought the Maxlife Warranty so I am set for another 10+ years, hopefully.

Re: 2014 Overland - A loss for words....

There are several TSBs that address some of the problems you are having.
Go here: http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_tsb.htm and make copies of the TSBs that apply to your veh.
Call the service dept while they have your veh and tell them you want all applicable TSBs applied to your veh and give them a list of the TSB #s. All the update information is available to them. They have no excuse not to get them done. If they say they cannot do any of them speak to the service dept manager and or the dealership GM. If the TSB has been issued they can do the updates.

msmith56 - I sympathize with your problems. My advice: Have every issue fixed under warranty (for free), then immediately trade in your Overland for something else. Life's too short; drive what you like and like what you drive.

I honestly don't want to trade it in for something else. I really do like the vehicle, it is the best vehicle I have ever owned. I'm just concerned about future resale value and issues that have yet to occur. I spent close to 50K on this vehicle and I don't expect to have any issues like this anytime soon. I did not post here to stir up anything or get people fired up. I purchased my Jeep because it has everything I was looking for in a SUV. I'm just looking for constructive advice as to how to handle the situation. This is my first Chrysler vehicle and frankly I had never considered anything Mopar due to the repuation of the big 3. I read many favorable reviews and I still feel that the Jeep is the best vehicle to meet my needs. I don't know if Chrysler will step up to the plate and remedy the situation or how they will resolve the issue?

If you have that many problems, i'd contact chrysler and see if they can take care of you in some form or another...The best would be that they buy the car back from you to get you into a brand new one.

You clearly got a lemon.

However, theres no reason to think the value goes down if you replace the tranny. Its a brand new tranny. Rebuilt is another story.

Jeeps tend to hold value really well. The Laredo and Limited are the best. The overland and summit take a bigger hit but still very good resale.

The SRT is abysmal in terms of resale, however.

OP used white text. You must have a white background (like me). You will have to highlight the text or switch to "Black Night" in the lower left hand corner in order to view it.

I posted it in the wrong area on the WK2 area and received a PM that it was being moved but apparently it was moved to the WK area instead of the WK2 area. I have PM'ed the person who advised me of the move to check to verify it was moved to the correct location.
