If Jeep didn't see a problem or a loss in value then they wouldn't offer you any money. Bottom line is that it will significantly effect the value as any potential buyer will balk as it is a potential problem. Likewise any dealer is going to short change you as they know that it will be hard to sell. If you have a carmax local you could go (with it cold) and get an appraisal (letting them see the smoke) and compare it to blue book. I would also think about this lawyer you have, from the very little you have stated it kind of sounds like he is a settler and may not have your best interests in mind.
If you want to keep the vehicle, you could go back at Jeep and tell them you are concerned it will turn into a problem and get them to give you a lifetime maxCare instead of cash. This way, if/when the problem gets worse you are covered....
