2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

First of all, let me thank all of you. This being my first jeep and first new vehicle in 14 years (had a 2000 Maxima, loved that car), this forum has been an excellent resource when I had questions\concerns on my new Overland. I love my Overland BTW.

Okay, I know all the problems with the new 8 speed transmission have been well discovered here. I have a jeep built in June 2013 so I am fairly certain I am due for the TSB update I found a thread on - but I only have 1500 miles on it and won't ask to have it updated until I go in for my first oil change.

That being said, the other day in traffic I was in a construction zone. Traffic was down to one lane and the usual jerks kept coming fast in the lane to be closed bypassing those of us who were following the rules and having to wait through multiple lights to get through. One such jerk attempted to get in front of me to I pushed on the throttle (in ECO mode unfortunately) to tuck up behind the car in front of me so he wouldn't have room. Of course I had to push even harder just to get the jeep to respond. By the time she kicked and went into overdrive I had to let off the throttle. When I let off the throttle, the jeep was stuck in second gear, going about 25 or 30 MPH. It probably only went on for 5 seconds, but it sounded like the the old cars when you were in low 1 and driving 50 mph. I must have finally hit the gas and it snapped out of it.

Has this happened to anyone else? And did I hurt my tranny?

I doubt you did anything to the transmission by it being in second at those speeds. Now...your engine...it's gonna blow . I'm teasing of course. If you had said it somehow managed to be in first while you were going much faster I'd be concerned but not second at the speeds you mentioned--especially for only a few seconds. It'd just be like an extended kickdown or engine braking scenario.

Re: 2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

Yeah if freaked me out quite a bit. Of course my husband told me to stop the road rage and just let people by. I took the jeep out and did some quick and brief full throttle accelerations at different speeds and it seemed to shift fine. Thanks for responding, I should just let my jeep be and chalk it up to the new technology.

One good side effect of getting my new jeep is for the most part I have quit speeding and become a more conservative driver other than that construction incident. Something about this jeep - aside from knowing a heavy foot will kill gas mileage - has me slowing down and enjoying my ride more I suppose. I love technology and this thing has me smiling from ear to ear when I drive it. Love the remote start using my phone and the Uconnect app too.

Are you sure you didn't hit one of the paddle shifters by accident, thus putting the transmission in manual shift mode?

Re: 2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

This has happened to me at least once before in very similar conditions (although I wasn't running in Eco mode -- I never do). I haven't gotten the TSB applied yet. Also, I'm not sure what gear it was, and I don't believe I hit one of the paddle shifters because it eventually downshifted itself and I don't hold the steering wheel in a way that would make that likely.

Basically I gave it quite a bit of gas to make a quick maneuver at non-highway speeds, then let off the gas quickly once it finally kicked down and started moving (there was quite a delay -- this is why I tap into Sport mode when I anticipate having to accelerate quickly), and after letting off the gas it continued to rev very high for a second or two or three before it finally upshifted rather clunkily.

Re: 2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

I highly recommend the negative battery terminal removal mod for the '14s (see link in my sig) - before I did it on mine, I couldn't stand driving in Eco mode. Since I did it I've never turned off Eco. Cured all the hesitation; etc. I was experiencing with my transmission.

Re: 2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

No, don't think I accidentally hit one of the paddle shifters. I like JeepersCreepers do not hold the wheel in a way that would make it possible either. I'll check out the negative terminal removal mod though.

For the most part my jeep shifts okay. When I first got it I babied it and hated how the transmission shifted but once I started driving it more normally the only time I hate the ECO mode is when I need to accelerate quickly. I kick off the ECO mode when I know I might have to accelerate quickly although in the situation I found myself I had not done so. I suspect even with ECO off I'd have still had that problem.

Thanks to all of you for your input, I really do appreciate it!

Re: 2014 Overland stuck in second gear after briefly accl and let off gas

That stupid hestitate followed by excessive downshift caused me to get in a small accident.

I keep eco off now.

Mine was built after TSB.

Gonna try battery thing.

Oof, that's not good. Have you contacted Chrysler? I would think your complaint would (hopefully) carry more weight because of that.

You can also pull the fuse for the same effect. Should be number F60 for the TCU. That's worked for a lot of people and it made a difference in mine as well and you won't have to mess with the battery.

A similiar thing happened to me in my 2013 Grand Cherokee Loredo. I was at a stop, punched it to pull out in traffice and let off and then was like stuck in first gear. RPM's way up there and not moving. Scared me to death. I have 1400 miles on the car. I pulled over and shut it off after driving less than a mile. Restarted and it has been fine but now I am scared of my 42000$ car locking up on me. My engine light did come on breifly. I wonder should I take it in and like you, did I damage any thing. I dont think I did anything wrong.

This has also happened to me. Thinking about passing someone, car responded too late so I changed my mind. Then it downshifted into 2nd and the car started shaking. I did not touch a paddle shifter and when it happened I was not on the accelerator.
