2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

So, I've noticed the posts about horrible shifting on 2014 GCs have died down the past several months.

Unfortunately, I'm still experiencing it @20K miles.

I'm curious what exactly people are doing to address their poor shifting quality aside from taking it to the dealer (I've done that several times). Air filters, resets, etc ?

Re: 2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

My '15 3.7 Overland started to shift roughly at 4,000 miles, about a month ago, primarily from 1st to 2nd, and 2nd to third. Took it to the dealer, who applied the latest TSB software update, but this did not remedy the problem.

I then realized that the change in outside temperature and the hard shifting began at about the same time. So, I've been keeping track of the transmission fluid temperature, and as others have suggested, once the transmission temp gets to about 120 degrees F., the hard shifting goes away.

The weird thing is that my previous '14 Limited always shifted like butter, no matter what the temperature was.

Re: 2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

The dealer installed yet another software update last week to my tranny and now its perfect. It was fine before except when cold. I have a 2014 V6

The only "Tricks" that have worked for me are to drive very gently until the Transmission fluid temperature reaches at least 120 degrees (F). Once mine reaches this temperature, the transmission shifts like butter.

I think I read somewhere that the 2016's actually have a heater to quickly warm up the transmission fluid.

Re: 2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

First shift out of 1st on a cold day is a touch harsh, but I'm used to it, and instinctively smooth it out with my foot on the gas. Other than that, it shifts as smooth as any auto I've driven.

And by the way, I've never had any of the shifting updates done. I expressly tell the service people not to do them. I had an experience with an early build Buick Enclave that had several shifting updates done. The shifting seemed to get worse with each update. I thought I'd give this Jeep some time to get used to me, and me to it. No complaints.

Re: 2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

Well, our 2015 v6 has been in the shop twice. Both times because the vehicle shifts like crap from 1st to 2nd. Once warmed up it was fine. They found nothing wrong.

So, now it also affects the 2nd to 3rd shift.

Now, when we start out in the morning, we get bounced around from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd for about three miles....cant drink coffee until I am almost at work....dealer says NTF....for $44k? How about a Nissan Murano or Caddy SRX????????

Re: 2014 Shifting Quality Updates?

What finally fixed it for me was getting the valve body replaced. It took quite a few complaints to the dealer - two dealers, actually - over a period of 2 years about the shifting before they finally replaced it, but after they did, the difference was night and day. Several upshifts/downshifts were bad but 2-3 in particular used to be consistently awful, sometimes even after the transmission warmed up. Now, while the transmission still has its oddities and the occasional rough-ish shift here and there, it is so, so much better, and has been for the past 5K miles or so since it was replaced.

How much of that was due to any resets they did during the valve body replacement (assuming they didn't do it before, after the software updates and stuff, which they tried before the valve body replacement) who knows but I'm leaning towards the valve body being the main cause of the drastic improvement due to it still being better after this many miles.
