2014 Summit - Suddenly Applied Brakes By Itself

While driving this morning @ ~25 MPH through a construction zone, the BRAKE indicator showed up (in red) on the display, the ABS kicked in, and the vehicle was brought almost to a stop... all this without any driver input. There were neither obstacles nor persons/animals near the vehicle at the time; it acted as though the Adaptive Cruise Control was active (ACC was off) and the vehicle suddenly approached another vehicle (nothing nearby).

I even tried driving through the same area at the same speed and cannot duplicate the problem. The Jeep will go into the dealer shop next week to be checked over, but finding any error codes is unlikely as the system frequently checks and rechecks itself. During the remaining 80 miles I drove afterward, no problems were observed.

Any ideas?

Re: 2014 Summit - Suddenly Applied Brakes By Itself

That was most likely caused by the FCW forward collision warning.
It's the button below the radio controls near the Eco button.
Very helpful in general if you're dreamy while driving
It only happened to me once for it to go off with no app obstacle In front. On the highway where it displayed the brake message and only mildly applied the brakes.
I only had the thing brake like crazy once...couple of days ago. Had a car in front the stepped on the brakes but it was far enough for me not to worry...I was about to brake too when the fcw displayed brake and braked like crazy. I wasn't wearing the seetbelt so I hit my head on visor. First time when I said bad words to my Jeepa.

My FCW has done that for cars that have changed lanes into a turn lane. They're no longer in front of me...but when they brake for the turn it confuses the FCW.

I've turned it off.

Or if they slow down at all before they are fully out of in front of you, it will brake.

Re: 2014 Summit - Suddenly Applied Brakes By Itself

On our '14 Grand Cherokee Overland, the big red message that says "BRAKE!" has shown up numerous times in the last couple of months. When this happens there are no other cars near her. My wife only drives it on average of 130 miles a month.

While parking in the garage, she did bump into a plastic tote and that caused the square plastic piece around the front sensor to come off, but she pushed the plastic piece back on without a problem. This brake warning issue seemed to start after she bumped the tote so maybe the sensor got messed up some how.

Should we be concerned that the vehicle will suddenly brake by itself? So far it has not applied the brakes by itself.

Re: 2014 Summit - Suddenly Applied Brakes By Itself

Yore sensor hath been misaligned and shall be re-calibrated !

Been there done that. There will be no diagnosis of any faults, codes or errors by any mechanic until it happens with them in the car. performing a freeze-frame of some sort. They will have to re-align the sensor. If something else is damaged or cracked, you got bigger issues but most instances just require recalibration.

Too much useless technology going into cars. This is the only reason I'm considering leasing my next vehicle. I can't imagine owning one of these with no warranty. And that goes for any brand.
