Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

I have to put out a big thanks to Truckie. The noise in the video that he posted sounded just like the noise that I had so I asked him to update me on his progress. They had his Jeep for a week at the dealers, and when they found the problem, he was kind enough to share the fix. It turns out that a heater hose running along the firewall in back of the engine can come in contact with the trans vent tube which has a jiggle valve at the top. I figured it was a long shot, but when I raised the hose up about an inch, the noise stopped. I zip tied it at the new elevation to a hard plastic PCV pipe close by with a little piece of foam in between and that did it. After two months of aggravation, a little direction fixed the problem in 5 minutes. This website is a great resource Thanks again to Truckie and all the other members.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Thank you for sharing the fix Stevm65. My annoying rattle is gone! In addition, super relieved to know the rattle was coming from a hose not from something major. It looks the type of hose casing they used is the issue...

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

You're very welcome. I'm just passing along the good deed done for me. I know what you mean about being relieved. I could have sworn it came from inside the cluster or heater box and I'd never find it. I guess that particular problem shows up quite a bit. Maybe someone from Jeep reads these forums and will notify their dealers.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Thanks again for all of the great information. This site has been a valuable source of data, and I'm learning that many others have vehicles afflicted with the same issues and concerns I continue to have with my 14 Limited. I'm bringing mine back to the dealer for the second time tomorrow for this issue and also for the continued harsh downshifting.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Hi guys - I think I'm the only one that Trukie's heater hose/firewall fix didn't work for. As far as I know, the dealer performed the "fix", but no help.

I'm wondering if anyone can pose a picture of the repair. I'm curious to see how it compares to the work done by the dealer.

Thanks!

I seem to be in the same boat as you, scottopp. I second the request for anyone to please post pictures and/or additional details on the location of the affected heater hose.

Also, just to be sure we're all talking about the same issue/symptom- can anyone who resolved their issue using the heater hose fix confirm that the problem was a metallic rattle noise that occurred only under light acceleration and only when the vehicle was in gear (i.e, no rattle when revving engine when in park/neutral)?

Hey Rookie/ Scotttopp

I had a similar issue, with my V6 CRD Overland as I mentioned before, the rattle was most notable between 1000 RPM & 2000 RPM, the dealer did the repair and stated "All fixed, no more rattle". Only to discover that on the trip home the rattle re-occurred. I contacted the dealer and again organized the GC to go back to the dealer, this time for a week and a half, and a couple of visits by me to prove what I was saying, even though I recorded the sound (engine sounding like a 1950's diesel tractor). The issue was finally resolved with some very slow communications between the dealer and Jeep Australia, which culminated in the dealer resetting the the fuel management system. However...... Since that was done in early November the issue has re-occurred after I had a lovely incident with the cruise control/FCW where it decided to sharply brake the vehicle from 90km/h down to 40km/h and then cease to function, displaying an error message, luckily early Christmas Day so no other cars on the road. On coming to a stop and restarting the car the CC began to work again, but low and behold the diesel rattle was back.

I have had more issues with the GC since the recall update was done than before.

Hey boulder,
Thanks for your feedback. Sorry to hear of the issues you've had w/ your vehicle. I'm thinking our issues may be different- my jeep is the 3.6L gasoline v6, while yours is the diesel. Oddly our issues sound very similar (including the slow/lack of communication from the dealers), but with the different engines it seems unlikely to be the same problem. Just out of curiosity, is your vehicle 4x4 or 2wd?
Good luck and keep us posted on any possible solutions to this issue. Thanks

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

sorry for the delay. This is the offending hose, with the blue tape on it. You are looking at the passenger side rear corner of the engine bay with the engine cover removed. There is a little push-on hanger holding the hose to the firewall, but that's positioned too low. I had to disconnect that hanger, raise the hose about an inch from it's original position and secure it to stop the noise. The noise was a dry rattle like a screw vibrating in the bottom of a plastic cup. It was on acceleration, especially when the engine was straining through a rpm band around 1200-1500. No noise in neutral or reverse
