Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Thanks StevM65 for the photo. The photo was perfect - unfortunately, moving the hose didn't work for me. Tough to move things around with the number of tie-wraps the dealer added.

Yes, by the way, my rattle is exactly as you described. I can at least now visualize where the issue is -- I'll follow the hoses along that wall when it warms up.

Thanks for the post!

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

you're welcome. If you zoom in on the picture you can see a threaded stud sticking out of the firewall right below my fix. I believe it's holding the heater box in, but they decided give it another purpose as a strap anchor point, as well. The original strap had a little ear with a hole in it that pushed over that protruding stud. I pulled it off the stud and slid it down the hose a bit out of the way before putting the tie wrap on. If you don't disconnect that original strap it will hold the hose in the wrong place. You can see how the hose starts to sag as it transverses the back of the firewall bringing it closer to the transmission vent. That explains how my noise varied somewhat with temperature as that hose material would expand and contract with the water temp. Just be careful and don't start yanking and cutting indiscriminately.

Here's a recording of the sound. I just held my iphone under my steering wheel and caught it. Several times in fact. They all sound the same. Is this what others have ??

Is your truck a V6 or a V8?

V6. 2014 Overland. Btw, it's way more easy to identify and hear on the iphone than here.

Unfortunately, the V6 Engine has a rattle and Chrysler is well aware of it.
They claim it's the normal sound of the truck. I have never bought into that.
I was told it was the muffler. I don't believe it. They replaced mine completely and it still had the noise. I think it's the valves. They won't go near it because it would cost a boat load of money to fix.
I have since traded my V6 up to the V8. A HUGE difference. No noise and the truck is so much tighter.
I feel your pain. Be nice to your dealer, they hold all the cards.
I found it helpful to call Chrysler care and file a complaint.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

That is the heater hose/ trans vent noise. I listened to mine quite a bit over a three month period, and your noise sounds exactly the same and also the same as the noise in Truckies earlier video(page 5) . I was able to test mine by holding the brake on and bringing the rpms up slowly. The noise kicked in about 1200. raising the heater hose a bit should fix it. look at how I fixed mine on page 12

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Thanks again Steve - funny thing. I cut the tie wrap that I used to hold up the tube/hose and moved a driver's side connector a little and magically this morning the rattle is dramatically reduced. Of course I have no idea what I moved or if it's permanent. At least I managed to change it. I'll be looking at the everything Steve mentioned and anything else that's close to that screen.

Progress for sure!

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Good for you. Keep at it you'll find the solution. When I raised the hose I also pulled it gently to the passenger side to get the sag out of it. Just play around with it. I owned a big auto salvage yard for 30 years, so there was a bit of intuitiveness that's hard to explain involved. Even at that, this was a tough one and Truckies experience was the key.

Totally unrelated...just for fun Here's a picture of my Father and Uncles as well as one of their hot rods.

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

Thanks Stevem65 for posting this pic. I was able to fix the rattle on my 2014 JGC Limited.

Referenced your pic in another thread, vibration /rattle noise 2014 gc laredo

I am using the type of foam insulation that one would use to insulate a home air conditioner. Did the dealer provide you with that piece of foam that was placed between the two hoses or did you get that yourself? If so, what type of material is that?

Re: 2014 V6 Rattle?

That was strictly DYI. I think that I used a piece of exactly what you are talking about, the cylindrical foam tubes they sell to enclose AC condenser lines. I don't think that it matters much, I just had a piece of that handy and a section of the cylinder conformed somewhat to the shape of the hose. I don't believe that the foam piece was as crucial in the repair, as moving the hose was. I'm just a belts and suspenders guy and wanted to make sure that the hose and the PCV pipe that I zipped it to had some buffer and would never chafe.
